#Radon is in the air, but outdoors, it's very low. Indoor #levelsofradon can be higher, as buildings trap #radon. #Radonlevels vary based on the #typeofhouse and the #flowofair through the #home. #Radoninair can be very high: in caves or in poorly ventilated underground mines.

The Thames Barrier comprises multiple moving metal gates that can halt water flow during potential flood events. Since its creation, London has successfully avoided costly storm-related death and destruction, but today’s changing climate and rising sea levels are challenging the integrity of London’s anti-flood walls. From 1980 to 1990, the barrier was closed only four times; from 2010 to 2020, the barrier was closed 50 times. It was never designed for such frequent use. In response to evolving weather patterns, the UK government created the Thames Estuary 2100 Plan, a future-looking plan that monitors and adapts the metal gates in response to tide data. With each decade, the plan outlines potential upgrades to the existing barrier and the construction of additional flood defenses. The plan hopes to futureproof London, but whether or not the Thames Barrier will stand the test of time will also depend on how climate change reshapes the world. https://lnkd.in/gF5rPkye

In the world of construction, where precision and durability are paramount, the importance of moisture measurements in screeds cannot be overstated, especially in a country where climate variations can be significant. Trees provide many different ecosystem services for the environment, social and economic realms. Here's an example of one that can affect human health during heat waves, our pocket books by requiring less AC, trees help keep humidity in the ground. What other ecosystem services do you see from this example?
Our video from last summer is making the rounds again 🌳 And we get why — heatwave season is just around the corner. As far as solutions go, urban trees are pretty impressive: they can cool their surroundings by up to 12°C. If you go outside during a heatwave, you'll notice a big difference in temperature between streets lined with trees and bare concrete pavements exposed to the sun. That's because trees provide shade and bring moisture back into the air, cooling the surrounding areas. And that’s exactly why we're planting urban trees, from LA to London: https://lnkd.in/du9_KZqp #urbantrees #trees #heatwave

In coastal and wetland environments, wet cast blocks can withstand the pressure and potential erosion caused by water flow or shifting dunes. They feature additional benefits for projects, including: 💧Lower porosity levels leading to less water absorption, therefore reducing the risk of water infiltration, which can weaken structures. 💧Higher block density and overall strength mean the blocks are less likely to crack or degrade and perform better in freeze-thaw cycles. Though freeze-thaw cycles aren’t necessarily a concern in southern climates, this durability speaks to the overall strength of the blocks. 💧Blocks are produced in controlled environments, resulting in uniform shapes and quality, which is critical in water applications where precision is vital. #truemontmaterials #redirock #novum #florida #georgia #concrete
