Is it time to rediscover returns? Following the 2008 financial crisis, low interest rates and loose monetary policy became commonplace. However, it's important to note that this stable scenario doesn't represent a typical state for the financial markets. From 1970 to 2000, the US Federal Reserve's base rate mainly hovered around five percent. Investors faced an era of sustained high interest rates influenced by a divided world and global geopolitical tensions until the 1990s. While the circumstances of those decades differ from today's, similarities can be found in market dynamics during high interest rate periods. This not only interests business historians but also offers investors the chance to explore fresh return opportunities in familiar asset classes. Maybe it feels too soon to say, but folks, it's an election year. Whether you lean Republican or Democrat, there's one common theme for investors who are incredibly dedicated to the belief that the US president has great sway on an economy: they lose confidence in the economy when their party isn't in power, and often they pull their money out of the markets for those years. The reality is that regardless of who's in office, the markets perform. In the box at the top left of this graph provided by JP Morgan Asset Management, you can see the average annual return in the markets during the years each president was in office, starting with George W. Bush. Over the last 30 years, markets averaged 10.1%, regardless of who was in office. Lesson: don't let your political feelings sway your determination to invest; if you do, the one common theme will be that you lose out! #politics #economy #usmarkets #stratoswealthpartners #jpmorgan

It’s been an extraordinary few weeks leading up to Sunday’s announcement from Joe Biden that he’s dropping out of the US presidential race. Deputy Chief Markets Economist Jonas Goltermann explores how financial markets have traded in that time to conclude that “investors are, for the most part, looking to Trump’s first term as the best available guide for what to expect from a potential second one. In other words, higher Treasury yields, a stronger dollar, and a generally constructive environment for equities.” But there are important caveats to how markets have moved, the politics remain highly uncertain, and there’s still three-and-a-half months to go until election day…. If you’re not getting Capital Daily, you’re missing out on concise, timely insight into how macro – and political – forces are shaping market outcomes. It’s out every trading day and is how our clients stay ahead of the curve: https://lnkd.in/d5g5P_R2 Jonas will join a panel of experts on Tuesday, 23rd July at 1000 ET/1500 BST to brief on this latest twist in the US presidential race and answer questions about what investors can expect from market returns from now until November and beyond.
