Incredible to see the growth of the Space industry highlighted in one comprehensive value chain overview! As we look to forecast the future of the Space industry, I find myself reflecting on the lessons of yesterday and the rise and fall (and rise again) of Iridium. Iridium offers a cautionary tale to founders looking to grow and scale their Space companies. An early pioneer in the LEO satellite communications market, Iridium received over $5B in investment in the late 90s but filed for bankruptcy in less than a year. Fast forward to today and Iridium persists thanks to a US Government approved fire sale and $4B debt erasure – now operating a new constellation of 75 broadband satellites. My takeaways: - Not all Space companies shown here will survive and prosper – and even fewer will find serendipitous investors and/or government intervention that can erase early-stage financing missteps. - Over dependence on dilutive capital in cyclical investment environments can create additional risk for emerging technology providers. - Development of a realistic product roadmap and revenue/growth expectations is essential – especially in a nascent market with rapidly evolving technologies and dynamic buyers. https://lnkd.in/gEAWWtQE

🚀 💰 Seraphim Space Index: Top 10 deals 💰 🚀 Most of the top deals in this quarter were concentrated in hardware-intensive sectors including satellite and rocket launcher technologies. However, the largest transaction was World Labs, a geospatial intelligence company that has recently emerged from stealth mode with a top-tier founding team, and syndicate of investors. Chinese companies maintained a strong presence in the top 10 deals. This quarter included companies such as Deep Blue, MinoSpace, and ispace, inc. These rounds focused on satellite manufacturing and launch, are likely driven by China’s ambition to develop capabilities comparable to SpaceX, ensuring they remain competitive in the global space race. D-Orbit, the sole European company in this quarter’s top list, extended its Series C round with an additional $56 million, increasing the total raise to $168 million. Although European companies often face greater challenges in accessing growth capital at the same scale, leading companies like D-Orbit haven't. Read more here - https://lnkd.in/eSqh-9VW

Travelling to deep space, colonizing planets, ushering in an era of space tourism are all dependent on the power of propulsion and its cost effectiveness. Fusion-based propulsion is our best bet for space mobility, and California startup, Helicity Space, is striving to add research and rigor to bring this to fruition. To get to asteroid fields in deep space, or to map out habitable planets, clean energy that is available in plenty is required. Fusion power, which has these attributes, can slash the travel time to Mars or elsewhere; besides being cheaper. Helicity recently raised USD 5 m in a seed round from Airbus Ventures, TRE Ventures, Voyager Space Holdings, and Urania Ventures. Helicity co-founder, Stephane Lintner said, “we’ll deliver a proof-of-concept fusion drive that the company is building. Before we put things in space, we need to demonstrate the full device working on Earth at smaller scale.” https://buff.ly/3NmjFJ2 This magneto-inertial fusion method was developed with space propulsion in mind by Setthivoine You, a plasma scientist, and co-founder of Helicity. According to Airbus Ventures partner, Lewis Pinault, it is “a novel approach to fusion reactions, using multiple recombining plasma jets to create and control the conditions necessary for fusion to occur.” #space #exploration #fusion #wherewillmantakeus

Rocket Lab and Varda’s collaboration is a key example of how partnerships are driving the space economy from concept to reality, with the potential to revolutionize industries and establish space as an integral part of the global supply chain. Rocket Lab’s vertically integrated Pioneer spacecraft, providing essential components for in-orbit operations, ensures that Varda can reliably conduct and recover experiments in space, marking a significant leap toward making space-based production feasible. This partnership’s success, including Varda’s ability to secure multiple reentry licenses and conduct complex in-space manufacturing like crystallizing pharmaceuticals, signals a new era for the orbital economy. It paves the way for more companies to harness the unique conditions of space to produce high-value products like advanced materials or drugs that can’t be manufactured on Earth. The routine recovery of space-made products will unlock new commercial opportunities, making space a viable production platform and opening up untapped markets. #NewSpaceEconomy
