LAUNCH EVENT: Join us in Our Circular Response to Current Plastic Consumption! As the world's population grows, so does our consumption of materials - with huge negative consequences for our planet. Plastics typically follow a produce-use-dispose process that generates waste and environmental concerns. However, there are ways to keep plastics in the loop and avoid this harmful cycle. Our research at Aalborg University contributes to paving new ways to achieve this. One example is the UPLIFT Project, coordinated by Cristiano Varrone (万思诺), where plastic packaging waste is biologically depolymerised and converted into more renewable and easily upcyclable polymers, following a biorefinery approach. Circular Economy for Plastics in Europe This week, Haley Lowry Global Sustainability Director for Dow Packaging & Specialty Plastics came to Brussels to discuss business opportunities for Dow in the region, aligned to our #TransformTheWaste goal. During her visit, she met different actors of the plastics value chain, including manufacturers of packaging, brand owners and recyclers. The main topic of debate was the upcoming #Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation #PPWR and how it could provide a critical business environment to drive demand for recycled plastics among other #sustainable technologies. Once again, we corroborate that collaboration among the value chain is the right way to successfully transition to a circular economy, as a key tool for decarbonization, and we reconfirm the central role that industry has in the development of public policy. 🔔 Can plastics be sustainable? New paper out with first author Sara Gonella 🕸 Sustainability of plastics is a complex topic. Sometimes what is presented as sustainable plastics is far less sustainable than you would think. 🏅 At the same time, traditional plastics are sometimes still the most sustainable option, more sustainable than their alternatives. 🕵♀️ Sara analyzed the different problems around plastics (pollution, greenhouse gases, health concerns, etc.) and the many solutions that are being developed (bio-based plastics, biodegradable plastics, mechanical and chemical recycling, behavior changes, etc.). 🧐 These problems and solutions are interrelated in many ways, but there is not a single solution that is able to address all problems, and all potential solutions come with disadvantages and create new problems elsewhere in the system. 🔮 Because of this complexity, we need to be very careful choosing the best policies to increase the sustainability of plastics, because many policies will have unintended and undesired consequences, potentially leading to less rather than more sustainability. 👩💻 Read all about it in the open access paper below.
