As of 2024, a report from the child protection organization reveals that one in three Afghan children will unfortunately face the challenges of hunger due to the ongoing food crisis. Around 8 million children will face a notable food crisis in the coming year, with severe winter conditions, drought, earthquakes, and economic challenges posing threats to these vulnerable children. Afghanistan is on the verge of a severe crisis, with children particularly at risk. Offering aid to children in need is a top priority for HBT, and your contribution can prevent the tragedy of hunger in Afghanistan. 💪 Empowering Communities to Combat Human Trafficking We believe in the power of community and the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation. Modern slavery and labour exploitation are pressing issues that affect millions worldwide, including here in New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga and Samoa. Community and church groups play a vital role in this fight. They are often the first point of contact for victims seeking help and support. By intentionally building layers of protection around vulnerable children and young people, we can create a safer environment and prevent exploitation. Join us in our mission to end human trafficking. Support local initiatives, educate yourself and others, and be a beacon of hope for those in need. Together, we can ensure that every child and adult can live free from exploitation. Captain Sammy Millar (Territorial Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Response Contact Person) says "This years theme "leave no child behind in the fight against human trafficking" calls us to consider how we speak with, educate and empower children in the fight against human trafficking. We know that the estimated number of children being trafficked and exploited continues to increase. One of the questions we can ask ourselves is how do I speak to my own children, or the children around me about Trafficking in Persons, so that they can be empowered to make a difference in this world. Captain Missy Ditchburn has created an intergenerational church service that can be used to engage our children in this conversation in an age appropriate way. One action to make a difference could be utilising this material in church on a Sunday." #ModernSlavery #CommunitySupport #TheSalvationArmy #EndExploitation

Learner. Researcher. Missionary. Author. Director of the Center on Applied Research for Vulnerable Children & Families.
I grew up on "summer missions," heading anywhere from my state to other countries. As is true with many ministry leaders, I can trace some of my early stirrings toward ministry from these very events. They were truly impactful. At the same time, I had little thought to the impact they would have on those we served. I assumed unequivocal good, aligned with my good intentions. As I've grown and learned and reflected and been challenged, I've come to understand that short-term mission trips come with the potential for great good and tremendous harm. However, it is possible to plan wisely and well, to protect and empower the very people we hope to benefit. Learn how here:

The list of questions swirling around my head re: Haiti's situation How are we protecting families & children in this crisis? After the crisis? Is this a civil war? With so much human rights abuse and trauma taking place in Haiti what will the recovery capital look like post conflict? How will people heal socially, culturally, physically? If it really takes 3 generations to heal from genocide-like national trauma how will our work include, prepare and accelerate tactics for healing, resiliency and recovery capital for Haiti.
