Enjoyed being part of the Panel “Impact Communication Best-Practices” at the Sustainable Foods Summit, where we discussed different approaches on how to communicate impacts (and often complex methodologies, data and research behind it) to customers and other stakeholders. I shared some tips that in my mind are pretty straightforward - but by the feedback received from the audience were perceived positive and helpful: 1. Everything starts by sharing your story, and the impact you’re trying to make - keep explaining why you do what you do. 2. Be authentic, be transparent and dare to be vulnerable. Working in a mission-driven data-driven company, impact measurement & management is still a relatively new sector, and it’s OK if our answers aren’t 100% perfect yet. It’s a start working towards positive transitions! 3. Impact information, backed by research, data, lots of numbers, technical reports etc. can quickly become overwhelming or difficult to understand for the end user. A relatively simple solution to tackle this is by using visual communication techniques such as infographics, which is what we at Impact Institute also started to do more of, and to which we’ve received a lot of positive responses. 4. Working in sustainability, and in a mission-driven business, don’t be afraid to also clearly communicate your commercial objectives, connecting the monetary value of impact (“True Value”, True Price). Remember, as long as you’re using impact information to make informed business decisions, doing more business = making more impact. Does this resonate with you?
