This week the European Parliament’s Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) and Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) committees voted in favour of the provisional agreement on the Artificial Intelligence Act. European Parliament has endorsed at committee level the provisional agreement on the #AIAct that ensures safety and complies with fundamental rights. On Tuesday, the Internal Market and Civil Liberties Committees voted 71-8 (7 abstentions) to approve the result of negotiations with the member states on the Artificial Intelligence Act. This regulation aims to protect fundamental rights, democracy, the rule of law and environmental sustainability from high-risk AI. At the same time, it aims to boost innovation and establishing Europe as a leader in the AI field. The US, UK, and EU have signed the world’s first binding AI treaty: the Council of Europe’s Framework Convention on AI, Human Rights, Democracy, and the Rule of Law. This agreement ensures AI development and use in both public and private sectors follow principles of transparency, human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. Signatories must assess and mitigate AI's negative impacts and provide remedies for violations of fundamental rights. They will need to determine whether new legislation is needed or if existing laws, such as human rights law, are sufficient.
