Networking Apple Valley Animal Shelter Dogs - Volunteer Page EUTH LIST 1/2 THESE DOGS NEED RESCUE COMMITMENT OR ADOPTION BY NOON 1/2! First of all, Happy New Year to our followers. We thank you all for sharing, pledging, fostering, and adopting Apple Valley Animal Shelter dogs. As an online community, we have saved so many lives The good news is that not all 17 dogs are on today's euthanasia list. The bad news is that the dogs that are on today's euth list have only until noon today to get commitment from a rescue or adopter. Please act quickly if you'd like to foster or adopt one of these dogs because they'll be gone before AVAS closes their doors for the day Although their links are down, these dogs are still alive and need shares, pledges, fosters, and transport. Please PM us if you can foster or transport and honor pledges only when you receive a freedom photo. Disclaimer: we are independent networkers running this page. 🌈RIP🌈 Sharing my story gives me a higher survival rate. Pledges will help attract a rescue. Rescues cannot intake animals without fosters. A1923842 Located At: BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions Description: My name is Jonas. I am a male, black and white Labrador Retriever mix. Age: The shelter staff think I am about 2 years old. More Info: I have been at the shelter since Feb 18, 2024. I am in kennel DD41. https://lnkd.in/gdVK-BWS Heartworm Status: NEGATIVE SHELTER NOTES 02/23/24 12:48 Standing at front of kennel with wagging tail but once kennel door was opened was cowering, tail tucked while leashing. Once leashed walked out with tail down and scurrying walk. Quiet in runs, walking around, sniffing other dogs and sitting around. Back inside kennel was snarling, lunging and forward barking when I and other staff passed by; other times he stood on all fours with wagging tail quietly. A couple times I would pass, and he was lunging then a couple minutes later pass again and he stood wagging tail. There was not anything consistent about what he was barking or calm towards (e.g. walking other dogs or direction I was walking from or holding anything in my hands) and he received treats every time I passed. Behavior unpredictable. Leashed for PM walk, he was cowering as I placed leash on him but once it was on walked with high flag tail, alternating between stiff wagging and loose wagging, fast walk next to me. Sat at back of run watching cars driving by on the grass. When I entered kennel he scurried in wide circle around me, ears back, whale eyes and lip licking. I sat on the bench, and he circled back towards me, climbed up onto the bench next to me. I leashed and he walked with wagging flag tail inside. Once back inside kennel, was forward barking, but this time able to redirect him with kibble soaked in chicken broth. Please contact BARC if you can help! They cannot assist out of state adoption or foster offers. Three things you need to know if you’re leading an animal services organization and you want to increase lifesaving: 1) You should have as many dogs and cats in foster homes as you have inside your physical building. Lifesaving animal services is a community ethic. Engage with the community. 2) If you’re recruiting for fosters on your Facebook page, you're speaking to a closed population. You have to invite the print and TV media in to walk with you, cameras on, and show the urgency of your situation and needs. People simply do not know what you need to save lives. Not everyone can adopt as often as you need, but they can foster. 3) Animals in foster get adopted much more quickly and have much less risk of illness and behavior devolvement. Do you live in a community where the norm is to accept skyrocketing euthanasia? By accept, I don't mean that you like it, I mean that you aren't talking about it, showing up to help with initiatives, volunteering to get dogs adopted faster, even advocating for solutions in your community through social media. If your community claims to be dog friendly, ask yourself what that should mean for you, for your community, and for the dogs. In my book, dog friendly communities come together to stop in-fighting and find solutions that are equitable and sustainable.
The Shelter Animals Count data on 2023 dog euthanasia brings me more questions than answers. Read my take on my latest newsletter and subscribe to get a behind-the-scenes look at what exactly is happening in America’s animal shelters and what we might do about it. Hint: there is no increase in owners surrendering their pets and lost dogs still make up 55 to 60% of shelter intakes. So why is dog euthanasia higher than it has been in the previous five years?

BEST PRACTICE ON REHOMING ANIMALS: Companion animals are for life, not for passing entertainment. Obviously it should go without saying that giving away your animal should be a last resort and animals should be a lifetime commitment. Not just until you get bored of them. But I understand that extreme circumstances can mean people who really do love their animals end up in situations where they need to rehome them. If they can't find help getting pet food from food banks and charities or pay for medical treatment, rehoming is the better option. If you can't find a responsible family member or close friend who can adopt them, contact a rescue and see if they can help find them a home and hold on to them for as long as you can before handing them to the rescue. The absolute worst case scenario should be a no kill shelter, but remember, what passes for "no kill" does not mean no kill. Never take them to a kill shelter. And never abandon them. They can get run over, starve, get mange, infections, before they finally get picked up as a stray in a terrible condition having suffered and making their chances of adoption even worse and adding costs to shelters for their medical care. That's if they get picked up at all. Some cats and dogs spend years on the streets and die on the streets. When there are rescues and shelters, why would you abandon them? Please DO NOT give your animal away for FREE to strangers. Do your due diligence. Contact a shelter who'll be able to advise on what to do. Dog fighters don't tell you what they do, they know exactly how to act like they are decent human beings. Would you give away your child to a perfect stranger? You're risking your dog like this and putting them in a lot of danger. Dog fighters use free cats, dogs, rabbits etc as bait, to "blood" the dogs they abuse and train for fighting. If you wouldn't harm your dog, then don't give them away to someone who is a stranger and might. However nice they may seem, even if they're female, even if they bring along a kid or "seem" really nice. Dog fighters have girlfriends and kids too. Your dog trusts you, don't put them in harm's way. 🙏❤ #adoptdontshop #spayandneuter #rescueanimals #shelteranimals #bankittenmills #banpuppymills #banbreeders #banpetshops #TrapNeuterRelease in countries without enough shelters https://lnkd.in/eRdTwUYT
