As a nurse who has been exposed to various healthcare systems across the globe, I've witnessed first-hand the seismic shifts our profession has endured, evolving dramatically from past years to the present. The landscape of healthcare is transforming at an unprecedented rate, making it essential for us to not only adapt to these changes but to embrace them actively.   Today, nurses across the globe are standing united, demanding change. Our call to action stems from the critical challenges we face daily, from adapting to digital engagement and telehealth to grappling with the repercussions of job inflexibility and long hours to battling wage disparities and restricted practice authority. The stark reality is that the healthcare system's antiquated and obsolete ways are no longer tenable in a world where technological advancements and patient demands are constantly evolving.   The importance of keeping pace with these changes cannot be overstated. The nursing crisis we face today, characterized by shortages and burnout, can only be addressed by acknowledging and adapting to the rapid evolution of healthcare. It's not just about technology; it's about rethinking our approach to care, valuing our workforce, and ensuring equitable treatment for all patients.   We're at a pivotal moment where we can redefine what nursing looks like for future generations. It's time for us to leverage our collective voice, advocating for policies and practices that reflect the complexities and demands of modern healthcare. Let's champion for continuous education, embrace digital tools that can enhance patient care, and push for the recognition and respect our profession deserves.   I urge my fellow healthcare professionals, policymakers, and society at large to join us in this crucial journey. Truly, nurses will need IT and engineering courses along with health courses. Can we also add in the critical care training, because learning LVADs vents and 10 IV drip titration on the job shouldn’t be a thing… and should have a salary to reflect that level of healthcare engineering knowledge. What is perfusionist training vs ICU nurse training? Should we be creating a track within nursing schools for area of interest so that more of the training happens before arriving on the units? Cut out the college electives in favor of more clinical courses and training.

🩺 A Shift in Healthcare: Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants Take the Lead 🌟 📊 Recent research published in The BMJ reveals a significant shift in the U.S. healthcare landscape: nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) now manage approximately one-quarter of all healthcare visits. 📈 The study highlights a rapid increase in the involvement of NPs and PAs in healthcare delivery, rising from 14% to 25.6% in just one year. This growth is particularly notable in the care of patients with disabilities, those living in rural areas, and those with lower incomes. 👩⚕️👨⚕️ The rise in the number of NPs and PAs is a response to the growing and aging U.S. population, coupled with a slower growth rate in the physician workforce. By 2031, the number of PAs is expected to increase by 48%, and the number of NPs by 80%. 🔍 The study also sheds light on the challenges of quantifying care provided by NPs and PAs due to indirect billing practices.
