Meanwhile, I want to posit here that we must NOT only build Right, we MUST hydrate Right too ✅️ The issue of flooding and climate change must be well understood as stemming from seemingly inconsequential choices and living habits of individuals and corporate organizations alike. Have you ever considered the impact of 5 million Lagosians purchasing water packaged in single-use plastics and sachet nylons daily? If 5 million people each use one single-use plastic bottle per day, out of which about 6% (250,000) are recycled, while a staggering 94% (4.75 million) end up in landfills and water bodies. This translates to 1.8 billion single-use plastics annually in the Lagos ecosystem, with an accompanying carbon footprint of 111,786 tons. Join our #5MILLIONSUPA project to remove 5 million single-use plastics and 180 tons of carbon footprint from entering the Lagos State ecosystem annually. This initiative will save each household N600,000 in water expenses through the installation of our Hydration Units, providing seamless access to healthier drinking water from the comfort of homes and offices. These units also promote health by preventing waterborne diseases and issues related to microplastics, such as cancer, hormonal imbalances, and respiratory diseases. We aim to install Hydration Stations in 1,000 homes and workplaces, contributing significantly to a healthier and more sustainable Lagos. We were honored to participate in the recently concluded 10th Lagos Climate Change Summit in Lagos, Nigeria. Our CEO, Mr. Hamza Yunusa, took part in an in-depth panel discussion on "Localizing Technology to Upscale Local Adaptation and Initiatives." During the session, he shared insights into how Hydronamics has developed a smart water metering system that promotes sustainable water management practices. He further highlighted the benefits of our technology for water utilities, including the ability to easily track customer water consumption, streamline payment processes, and detection of water leakages. On the customer side, our technology enables users to monitor their own water consumption and conveniently purchase water from anywhere in the world. Additionally, by eliminating the need for paper receipts, our system significantly reduces deforestation rates associated with paper production. For instance, our electric cooking technology eliminates harmful household smoke, while our fuel-efficient charcoal cookstoves reduce charcoal consumption by 50%, resulting in significant cost savings. Articulating these wide-ranging impacts, along with the vital support carbon finance provides in overcoming financial barriers, market adoption, and behavioural change, requires extensive stakeholder engagement—from government bodies to local communities. She highlights the recent introduction of electric cooking technology in East Africa as a remarkable moment in her work in promoting carbon market initiatives. Through the pioneering project, UpEnergy issued the world's first-ever carbon credits linked to electric clean cooking devices. These devices, developed in collaboration with PowerUP, have transformed cooking habits for low-income households across sub-Saharan Africa. Rehema anticipates that UpEnergy's recent authorization for carbon credits under Article 6 in Tanzania demonstrates the significant potential of this mechanism to enhance international cooperation and enable effective climate action across both compliance and voluntary carbon markets. This groundbreaking initiative in Tanzania not only aligns with national climate goals but also attracts international investment into high-impact, emissions-reducing projects. The corresponding adjustments permitted under Article 6 ensure that carbon credits are not double-counted, thereby enhancing market integrity and appealing to sophisticated global buyers who aim to fulfill compliance obligations while supporting broader environmental and social objectives. Ghana Water Company Ltd. wins Outstanding Climate Smart Utility at the International Water Association Water and Development Congress in Kigali! Due to the growing need for climate mitigation and resilience in the water sector, particularly among water utilities, Ghana Water Company Ltd. has, in recent years, focused on reducing emissions through innovative technological advancements. We have also implemented robust institutional and infrastructural systems to enhance resilience. Adopting drones for mass meter reading and digital sensors for pipe leak detection has reduced methane emissions from vehicular fuel combustion. Similarly, our electronic billing system and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system have reduced vehicular emissions. SCADA has streamlined real-time remote monitoring of supply pressure and flow, allowing for centralized control of dispersed water systems. Additionally, installing smart meters with integrated automated meter reading capabilities and introducing energy-efficient pumps have reduced our carbon footprint. Ghana Water Company Ltd.'s District Metered Area (DMA) project, implemented over the past two years, is to further mitigate emissions by reducing energy and chemical waste through minimizing physical losses from Non-Revenue Water. We also seek to strategically collaborate with partners in reducing Scope 3 and 4 emissions. To facilitate resilience, we have diversified our supply sources into surface water, groundwater, and desalination; improved water quality monitoring by introducing polymer treatment; conducted sustainability risk assessments for critical supply systems; and expanded our reticulation network. We have also developed climate emergency response plans, forged sustainable community partnerships, and enhanced our data management system with the EBIZFRAME ERP Tool. This recognition not only makes us proud of our commitment but also challenges us to deliver further as UNICEF, The World Bank and WaterWorX are actively engaged in our efforts. We believe that every little contribution to mitigate and provide resilience against climate change has a significant positive impact on the life of society, especially the vulnerable.
