How does the Clean Cooking with Biogas project in Kenya contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) & Food Security? 🌱 This project provides households with domestic biodigesters, reducing reliance on firewood and expensive fossil fuels. The leftover bio-slurry from the biogas process acts as an organic fertilizer, enhancing crop yields, improving food security, and generating extra income for families. 💡 Key benefits: - Improved soil health and resilience to climate change. - Higher crop yields, leading to better nutrition. - Cost savings by reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers. - Economic empowerment, with surplus crops often sold by women. 📢 For companies looking to invest in carbon credits that contribute to the SDGs, this initiative is an opportunity. By supporting this project through carbon credits, your business can directly contribute to SDG 2 and many more. 👉 Discover the project: https://lnkd.in/ewuQrVxb 👉 Directly invest: https://lnkd.in/eKcMXJpT 👉 Or contact our collegues: Robert Okhuysen & Harry Clemens Footages from project partner: Africa Bioenergy Program Limited

THE SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION OF WOOD PELLETS: A Zero-Waste, Low-Carbon Cooking Fuel Wood pellets are emerging as a sustainable alternative to traditional cooking fuels like charcoal, offering a cleaner, more efficient solution. These pellets are made from recycled biomass such as sawdust, wood chips, and agricultural residues—materials that would otherwise contribute to waste or landfill. By utilizing this biomass, the production of wood pellets follows a zero-waste approach that maximizes resource efficiency and minimizes environmental impact. THE PRODUCTION PROCESS 1. Biomass Collection: Organic waste materials are collected from sawmills, forests, and agricultural fields. 2. Drying: The raw biomass is dried to reduce moisture content, ensuring a higher energy yield during combustion. 3. Grinding and Pelletizing: The dried biomass is finely ground and compressed into small, dense pellets. 4. Cooling and Packaging: After pelletizing, the pellets are cooled, hardened, and packaged for distribution. BENEFITS OVER CHARCOAL Wood pellets burn more cleanly than charcoal, emitting fewer pollutants and carbon dioxide. They also offer better energy efficiency, burning longer and hotter with less fuel. This makes them ideal for both household cooking and commercial use. Moreover, unlike charcoal, which often contributes to deforestation, wood pellets are made from renewable resources. Carbon Credits and Financial Incentives One of the key financial benefits of switching to wood pellets is the potential to earn carbon credits. Businesses and households that reduce their carbon footprint by using cleaner fuels can generate carbon credits, which can be sold to organizations looking to offset their emissions. This creates a dual benefit of reducing environmental impact while generating additional revenue. In conclusion, wood pellets offer a sustainable, low-carbon solution for cooking fuel, helping to reduce waste, protect forests, and promote cleaner energy—all while creating economic opportunities through carbon credits. I’m excited to share key takeaways from the recently concluded CARBON FINANCING AND PELLET PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES TRAINING , held in Kigali and Gisenyi from 14th to 17th October 2024. Human activities are the leading contributors to global warming, and 29% of the global population still lacks access to clean cooking technologies. Clean cooking is essential, as one household using dirty fuels like charcoal for a year emits more carbon dioxide than driving a car for 20,000 km. Shockingly, deaths from exposure to dirty fuels surpass HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. Organisations like FairClimateFund play a vital role in supporting clean cooking carbon-based projects by providing guidance, helping register them on carbon credit markets, and facilitating the sale of carbon credits. For a project to qualify, it must meet SDG13 and at least two other SDGs, with a focus on humanitarian activities. While there are several clean cooking alternatives, pellets are the most affordable option, classified as Tier 4, are used in Mimi Moto pellet-based stoves, which are now equipped with chips that record cooking data to help claim carbon credits.. During pellet production, raw materials are broken down into small pieces, hammered into powder form, then sent into the dryer to reduce moisture from 30%-50% to 10%-14% before entering the pellet-making machine. The drying stage is critical to ensuring high-quality pellets. We had the opportunity to experience this process firsthand at BioMassters factory in Gisenyi. Special thanks to FairClimateFund , BioMassters , Mimi Moto and TRAIDE for sponsoring the event. Mimi Moto are always represented by their Product Developer Aart de Heer. I’m also grateful to East African Power , my employer, for sponsoring my travel and welfare, and to my supervisor, Paul Snijders , for always considering me for such impactful opportunities. A big thank you to Michael Guilfoyle, the pellet expert, for his invaluable insights on pellet production. Let’s continue advocating for clean cooking solutions that protect both our environment and health!

Did you see us yesterday on Arjen Lubach's #avondshow? 🇳🇱 As Arjen Lubach highlighted, the market in which FairClimateFund operates is extremely complex, and unfortunately, mistakes occur. FCF has long advocated for more transparency in the voluntary carbon market and a fair distribution of carbon funds. We strive for a carbon market that benefits people in the most vulnerable regions of the world. Climate finance is desperately needed for communities vulnerable to climate change and the voluntary carbon market can make an important contribution to this. For FCF, as well as for Arjen Lubach, stopping the use of carbon credits is not an option. We need to implement all available measures to limit the consequences of climate change. But there is still much to improve:   👉 It’s essential to assess CO₂ reduction projects, and consumers should search for high-quality initiatives. For instance, our project in Rwanda is assessed and recognized: https://lnkd.in/e9z-Gngw Additionally, FCF is the only provider of carbon credits certified by Gold Standard & Fairtrade Climate Standard. This ensures that local communities own the carbon credits and receive a fair price, including a Fairtrade premium: https://lnkd.in/e3i39UGi But it’s also crucial to use carbon credits responsibly: 👉 It is an additional measure; prioritizing the reduction of carbon emissions in your daily life or organization is essential. 👉 Communicate transparently, avoiding claims like "carbon neutral," and share your complete climate story.   Thank you #ArjenLubach for sharing this topic! We are a strong advocate of the assessment of CO₂ reduction projects and claims of companies by independent organizations. Fortunately, there are international initiatives in development that will deal with this.

If you want to contribute not only to a better climate but also to a sustainable, clean, and fair energy transition, feel free to reach out to us: info@fairclimatefund.nl (and by the way, we have many more amazing projects to contribute to, like in Chad!). This is a milestone I am incredibly excited about. Not because at times it felt like the end was never in sight, but because I can see that through our partnership, we are initiating an energy transition. Through the use of pellets and Mimi Moto stoves, people are getting the opportunity to move away from charcoal and switch to a much cheaper and cleaner alternative. The pellets are made in Rwanda, creating jobs. Oh well, just check out the full story below 😉. And we’re definitely continuing here so that more people in Rwanda can become part of the transition. Stay tuned!
