This year marks the 35th (REALLY?!? 😵💫) anniversary of De La Soul's groundbreaking album, Three Feet High and Rising. What can marketers learn from their colorful journey? Here are four key takeaways: 1. Stand out in your category. De La Soul disrupted the hyper-realistic, braggadocious and activist voices that dominated hip hop back in '89 with their colorful looks, modest voices, and gentle subject matter. Yet they were still 100% hip hop. 2. Find new users. De La Soul's unique style attracted not only hip hop loyalists. Their fresh approach and attitude (or, positioning) unlocked a whole new group of hip hop lovers. Byron Sharp may just call it driving penetration. 3. Look like yourself. The color scheme, typography, flower icons, peace sign, and illustration style have remained consistent over the years, evolving to fit current tastes and touch points. I'm pretty sure that Jenni Romaniuk would say it's packed with distinctive brand assets up there on The Late Show. Which brings me to.... 4. Look, speak, sound and feel consistent. De La Soul's members have obviously grown older (with Trugoy the Dove sadly passing at the age of 54) yet they have never lost the core of who they are and, most importantly, how they are identified.
