The most uncomfortable position a black professional can find themselves in is inbetween two white folks...as an example, in my building at work, we have security, they are more than likely 75% people of color...they are hired by the company to do a job, make sure all employees have their badge present and visible. if you forget your badge, they have a process that involves calling your sup...I saw the black security lady the other day trying to explain this to an employee, who wasn't trying to hear it...the part of the conversation I walk upon was this... security: you aren't going to disrespect me... employee: I wasn't being disrespectful... security: yes you were employee: I want to speak to your manager... I can only imagine the amount of shit those folks have to go through telling white employees they aren't able to just do what they want...that the world doesn't conform to the way they think it should go, and that the company they work for requires this.

The word on the cyber streets is that Black History Month UK budgets this year have either shrunk significantly or disappeared altogether. I'm curious to see which companies and brands step forward and provide evidence of their commitments in October, as well as, how they follow through with those commitments throughout the remainder of the year. Gentle reminder: Inclusion work should not be an afterthought or a trend used to merely weather the storm during times of uproar; it must be woven into the very fabric of your company's structure and processes.
