When I think about what makes a great sales engineer, technical expertise is just one part of the equation. What really makes an impact—what truly connects customers to solutions—are the soft skills that drive relationships and results. As I continue to explore opportunities in sales engineering, I’ve reflected on the soft skills that have shaped my success: Empathy: I pride myself on understanding the customer’s perspective. Listening intently to their challenges helps me offer solutions that feel personalized and impactful. Communication: Whether it’s breaking down a technical concept for a non-technical audience or delivering a pitch to stakeholders, clear communication builds trust—and I make that a priority. Collaboration: I thrive in a team environment. From aligning with sales teams to partnering with product managers, I’m always looking for ways to work together to exceed expectations. Problem-Solving: I enjoy the challenge of finding innovative, customer-centric solutions. Whether it’s a complex technical roadblock or an evolving requirement, I stay focused and adaptable. Adaptability: The sales engineering world moves fast, and I love keeping up. From mastering new technologies to adjusting strategies on the fly, I embrace change as an opportunity to grow. For me, sales engineering is about more than products—it’s about people. It’s about listening, problem-solving, and delivering value in ways that leave a lasting impact. I’m excited to bring these skills to a team that values both technical know-how and the human side of engineering. #SalesEngineering #SoftSkillsMatter #CustomerFocus #ProblemSolver

They build lasting relationships based on credibility and trust. 🚀 Adaptability: They’re at the forefront of innovation, always learning and evolving to stay ahead of industry trends. 🎯 Problem-Solving: They don’t just sell; they solve. Sales Engineering is not essential. don't try and tell me we are the key to closing deals what we do lacks impact nobody believes Sales Engineers drive revenue it's an unnecessary role don't tell me Sales Engineering is the backbone of the company deep down everyone knows sales can be done without SEs I don't want to hear Sales Engineers are crucial. (now read it from the bottom up)👆 #ducklife #salesengineering #presales

Sales Engineering is NOT an entry level role. Do you agree or disagree with this? I have met Sales Engineers in their 20s and Sales Engineers in their 60s. I think there is space for both early career professionals as well as seasoned professionals and I think the SE landscape needs both to thrive. We complement one another. Some folks learn about Sales Engineering early on, or transition from a complimentary role such as TAM or Support. They have the drive, tenacity, and energy to learn. Others spend years as practitioners before making the transition. They are a beam of light for their younger SEs and serve as trusted advisors for their prospects. As long as you enjoy the gig and you are good at it, Sales Engineering is for you. So if you are in your 30s or 40s, don’t think you are coming late to the game. Everyone has their own journey. And if you are early on, don’t discount yourself from a career in Sales Engineering. What are your thoughts on this? Are experienced SEs better than younger SEs? What benefit can each bring to the table? Drop your thoughts below.

Declining sales = hire more sales engineers I’m not so sure about this. A packaging equipment manufacturer we partner with has had declining sales since the middle of 2023. Project backlogs have kept them busy, but the concern now is how to move forward. The CEO mentioned wanting to hire more salespeople and sales engineers to generate new business. And while I could have just said yes and helped hire a few more salespeople, I didn’t think that was the right move overall. Instead, I gave a bit of pushback. My concern is this: Will people change careers and enter an otherwise uphill battle, possibly failing through no fault of their own? I don’t believe hiring more sales engineers is the quick answer to the current macroeconomic changes. ➡ Interest rates have been climbing ➡ It’s an election year And if you look at Bloomberg’s Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) below, you’ll notice a steady decline in equipment purchases for the past 3+ years. I think the best plan is to consider: >> Cutting costs >> Optimize the existing team’s efforts >> Create repeatable and scalable solutions This search was put on hold following our conversation and we'll revisit Q3. It’s the right move.

I met many great salespeople who came from an engineering background. Here's why #engineers often make great #salespeople: . . 𝟭. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺-𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 🛠️ Engineers are great at solving problems, similar to identifying a customer's problem and providing a solution in sales. . 𝟮. 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹 🔍 Engineers are very meticulous. In sales, paying attention to details can be the difference between a successful or unsuccessful deal. . 𝟯. 𝗟𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 🧠 Engineers use logic to persuade. A logical explanation can often convince a sceptical client. . 𝟰. 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 💪 Engineering projects demand perseverance, and the same goes for closing deals in sales. . Sales might be an excellent opportunity if you're an engineer considering a career change. .
