When I think about what makes a great sales engineer, technical expertise is just one part of the equation. What really makes an impact—what truly connects customers to solutions—are the soft skills that drive relationships and results. As I continue to explore opportunities in sales engineering, I’ve reflected on the soft skills that have shaped my success: Empathy: I pride myself on understanding the customer’s perspective. Listening intently to their challenges helps me offer solutions that feel personalized and impactful. Communication: Whether it’s breaking down a technical concept for a non-technical audience or delivering a pitch to stakeholders, clear communication builds trust—and I make that a priority. Collaboration: I thrive in a team environment. From aligning with sales teams to partnering with product managers, I’m always looking for ways to work together to exceed expectations. Problem-Solving: I enjoy the challenge of finding innovative, customer-centric solutions. Whether it’s a complex technical roadblock or an evolving requirement, I stay focused and adaptable. Adaptability: The sales engineering world moves fast, and I love keeping up. From mastering new technologies to adjusting strategies on the fly, I embrace change as an opportunity to grow. For me, sales engineering is about more than products—it’s about people. It’s about listening, problem-solving, and delivering value in ways that leave a lasting impact. I’m excited to bring these skills to a team that values both technical know-how and the human side of engineering. #SalesEngineering #SoftSkillsMatter #CustomerFocus #ProblemSolver

I felt stuck, no growing, no learning, no more earning potential. I needed a major change. My career started in IT supporting technology and keeping systems running. It was a great path to help me learn to be creative and problem-solve on the fly. But it was demanding, as it involved supporting a 24/7 operation, 3 AM migrations, weekend work, and reactive fixes to problems. I was burnt out and felt stuck. I had to make a change. The skills I had learned over the years supporting technology led me to a presales engineering role. It was amazing how well my technology skills helped me get started in sales engineering. But I was still missing the soft skills of being a strong presenter, building relationships, and understanding customer problems. Those are critical skills to be successful in the transition to sales engineering. If you want to make a transition to a new role you need to review the skills required and create a plan for how to acquire them. Sales engineering is a rewarding career that opens doors to many opportunities. Are you planning on making a transition to sales engineering in 2025, comment below?
