How does the future energy system look like? What are the innovative business models enabled by new technologies? What are the most exciting investment opportunities in this changing landscape? I discussed these and many for questions at the New Energy Summit of LCP Delta in Berlin last week representing Future Energy Ventures. Huge shout out to the amazing panel on scaling demand side flexibility and fascinating discussion with Jon Ferris, Emma Hellström, Tamika Balken and Julian Rominger. Key takeaways 👉 Demand side flexibility is an emerging and evolving market. The regulators are still shaping the rules and market design. Early adopters are driving progress and intrerest in flexibility is steadily increasing. 👀 Market participants are looking to understand the value of flexibility over time in different markets including ancillary service market, wholesale, local flex market and capacity market to develop most profitable trading strategies. 🚀 Need for flexibility services in the energy system is huge with sufficient space for both demand side response and utility scale batteries. The challenges to be worked on for full take-off are the following: i) economic - understanding the value of flex, ii) regulatory - clear rules of the game, iii) technical - hardware compatibility to connect to VPPs, iv) organizational - risk aversion to try new solutions in organizations, v) informational - understanding of flexibility space and how to participate in it.
