The way we deliver healthcare to residents in RACs makes no sense. It has evolved around a poorly designed federated health system that effectively leaves those in care with lower quality access to care than the rest of the Australian population. We don’t seem to understand the problem and think it could be solved by updating old systems with standards . This research suggests otherwise. Let’s hope the penny drops in 2025. Conclusion To date, outcomes of health information technology use in residential aged care homes have focussed on the staff and implementation, with limited evidence available about improvements in resident health, well-being, quality and safety. Future research should seek to expand the outcome measures used to judge health technology suitability for residential aged care homes to capture not only the quality and safety of resident care but also the things that matter to residents, their families, and the staff who provide direct care. In addition, there is a need to consider the rigor and consistency of measurements and reporting of staff qualifications and impacts to support understanding of the role of technology in delivering holistic, person-centred care in residential aged care homes, and comparability and benchmarking across the sector. #strategy

In 2024, inpatient facility construction demonstrated notable resilience. While new medical office building (MOB) projects declined to approximately 14 million square feet—marking a decrease from the 2022 peak—the inpatient sector maintained steady development. Notably, behavioral health construction surged, with over 4 million square feet initiated in 2024, and rehabilitation hospitals sustained historically high construction levels. Despite elevated construction costs, the healthcare development landscape remains active. #healthcarerealestate #medicalrealestate

*While higher interest rates in 2023 and 2024 have stifled the construction pipeline for many property types, Medical Outpatient Buildings (MOBs) have been more resilient than most. While construction starts are down 48% from 2022, there is no slowdown in the demographic, social changes and medical advances driving demand for outpatient space. *Rising occupancy and strong demand mean the sector is rife with opportunity. MOBs have seen increasing occupancy and rising rents as the construction pipeline slowed. Occupancy increased 1.5% from Q3 2021 to 93%. Rent growth remains about 2% year-over-year, slowing slightly as inflation declined. *Hospitals and Health Systems slowed investment in new buildings slightly, down 33% in 2024 from the 2018-2022 average. However, in the Southwest, overall construction is up 2.7% in the same timeframe, with hospitals, health system and government projects making up most of the construction. Government investment in MOBs has increased with numerous investments in behavioral health hospitals. From their mission-driven perspective, health systems could not slow construction as much even as the economic climate changed. *Investment in new construction by REITs and Real Estate Private Equity declined the sharpest, dropping over 77% from the average levels of 2018-2022. Developer operators of MOBs likewise slowed their investment by 74% from the 2018-2022 average.
