#OvercomingOCD - The 32-Card, 32-Day "Go To" Quick Reminder Scramble Happy Saturday! I'm so glad I'm posting daily again on my Facebook Page "Shannon Shy - OCD can be defeated. I'm living proof"! Since I got back home in 2020 from a 2-year tour in Afghanistan, a lot has happened in my peer support world -- I published my book and online course, "Turning Points," about my strategy to overcome OCD, how I implemented it, and my peer support methodology. I produced a 32-card deck of "Go To" Reminders that folks who suffer from OCD can use in whatever way is helpful--Post around the house, carry one for a month, carry a different one each day, etc. I've also continued my virtual peer support sessions. I wasn't good at posting, however, and certainly went into a funk after the hasty withdrawal from Afghanistan. I'm motivated again, so I've begun posting every day about a different topic. Hopefully, my posts have been and will be helpful to you. Beginning Sunday, 21 January 2024 and for the next 32-days, I will post a reel of me pulling a random "Go To" Quick Reminder card from the deck, read it, and then post on my social media feeds a paragraph or two about the saying on the card. This will give you context. You can order the cards on my website. https://lnkd.in/gqnqbpYA I cover the cost of shipping in the United States. Stay strong! I'm here for you! Please share this on your page! #OCD can be defeated. I'm with you. Let's go. #OCDAdvocate #ocdtip #ocdrecoveryturningpoints #OCDrecovery #OCDdrawings #OCDawareness #OCDlife #OCDProblems #OCDSupport #OCDhelp #OCDtreatment #OCDtips #OCDWarrior #OCDadvocate

It’s rare I struggle with my OCD now but from 12-early 30s it was an utter nightmare. Last week it kicked off without warning. I have intrusive thoughts OCD where the Obsession and the Compulsion are both unobservable. This is why OCD sufferers call it Pure-O although a doctor wouldn’t call it that. No form of OCD is pleasant!! But I like to mention Pure-O from time to time because you don’t hear about it often and that makes it worse. I hope one or two people will Google it now and go “omg that’s what I’m like!” and feel less afraid. Autism and OCD go hand in hand very frequently. Last week my autism meant that every interpersonal interaction was something that required a lot of thought (as usual) but then less time to process them plus some stressors like sensory stuff, rigid beliefs, guilt and overwhelm PLUS a few changes in my routine meant BINGO. The button was pressed unbeknown to me and all of a sudden I was feeling really bad and trapped and worried. Today I feel great because I talked about it. And the same resources that almost killed off my OCD years ago still comfort me. And my partner, business partner, therapist… they totally get it. As a terrified 12 year old in the 1990s I was thoroughly alone with it. Nobody knew about Pure-O then but things have changed. I hope this helps someone. I promise you I only get this 5% of the time now (as horrid as it is). It used to be 90% for long periods and I didn’t want to be alive when it really ground me down. Don’t let anyone tell you you’re stuck for life. It can massively reduce, like it has for me ❤️. 💡 Wired Differently now offers MHFA England® training. I did it myself and thoroughly enjoyed it. 5% of the total booking cost goes to our new charity Start Differently to support neurodivergent people into work & self employment.💡 #ocdawareness #anxiety #ocd #comorbidities #neurodiversity #mentalhealth #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #mhfa

30 years speaking with, hearing, & understanding children and young people who could not be safely cared for at home, & adult stakeholders in their lives. Clinical Psychologist and experienced Board/Committee Chair.
In this video I share my thoughts about the need to broaden the much used maxim in out-of-home care circles, from "respond to the need" to "respond to the reason for the behaviour". My views are shaped by my observation that adults with a caring concern for children and young people who cannot safely be cared for at home often struggle to identify the "need" that gives rise to the behaviour. A better approach, in my opinion, is to have a good explanatory model that guides therapeutic responses. The video is intended to be of most interest to those who interact with children and young people who are recovering from a tough start to life in care and professional roles. PEER SUPPORT AND SELF-CARE "Self-care has long been very important to those in any industry that provides support to others. Peer Support is now becoming recognized as one of those industries. What makes Peer Support part of this equation? " Peer Support has indeed become a critical component in the realm of caregiving and support professions, including and especially those serving Veterans. What sets Peer Support apart is its foundation in empathy, shared experiences, and understanding. Peers who have walked similar paths to those they support can offer unique insights, genuine connections, and a sense of camaraderie that can be immensely beneficial. In the context of supporting Veterans, Peers bring a deep understanding of the challenges, triumphs, and complexities that come with military service. They can relate on a level that transcends mere sympathy, offering empathy borne out of shared experiences. This shared understanding creates a safe space where Veterans feel understood, validated, and supported in their journey towards healing and resilience. As Peers serving Veterans, our battle cry is clear: continue to prioritize self-care so that we can be effective in our support roles. Just as we advocate for Comrades to prioritize their well-being, we must lead by example. By nurturing our own mental, emotional, and physical health, we ensure that we have the capacity to show up fully for those we serve. Let's commit to regular self-check-ins, seek support when needed, and cultivate healthy habits that sustain us in our mission to support our fellow Veterans. Together, as a community of Peers, we can continue to make a profound impact in the lives of Veterans by fostering a culture of empathy, understanding, and resilience. Today, our partner National Survivor User Network, in partnership with Act Build Change, published The Shape of Safety: a guide to reimagining safety and safeguarding alongside young people with lived experience of mental ill-health, distress and trauma. This guide resulted from a series of workshops centring on young people with lived experience of mental ill-health, distress or trauma, who have been failed by safeguarding systems designed to keep them safe. It was created in collaboration with user-led organisations: Revoke and Voice Collective. Their guide celebrates methods of fostering cultures of safety and care within organisations, offering principles for better practice, key questions, and a practitioner’s checklist to support positive change. Meet the team – A message from our CEO, Emily Harrison. The mission for Cookson First Aid is very simple, we want to save lives and empower people to feel prepared in an emergency through free first aid training. We are proudly a social enterprise, working in partnership with Oliver Cookson Foundation, and are building a not-for-profit business to deliver training and create a long term legacy for Cookson First Aid. We have built a free product that works, tried and tested (and is five star rated on Trustpilot, thanks to Richard Smith BA(Hon) and Matthew Donnelly) and now we are developing new courses to meet the real needs of the communities we work with, such as our mental health first aid training. Social enterprises have such a unique position, and I think that is why people have really connected with us, they see that we are a business operating solely for the community, and our message – that everyone needs to know how to save a life – is a powerful one. So sign up for a course, or get in touch with Bal Uppal to find out how we can help you become a life saver today. #firstaid #savealife #firstaidtraining #firstaidcourse #defibrillator #basiclifesaving #firstaidatwork #cpr #drabc #cprtraining #savinglives #staysafe #lifesaver #socialimpact #socialenterprise #socialvalue #community
