Torex's Media Luna Mexican gold project 60% complete Mexico-focused Torex Gold Resources Inc US$875mn Media Luna underground project was 60% complete by the end of 2023, up from 49% at the end of September. Detailed engineering was 84% complete, and procurement was 63%, the Toronto-based company said in a release. The pace of underground development and construction and surface construction picked up as anticipated, with completion levels at 60% and 41%, respectively, Torex added. “Development of Media Luna remains on track for first production in 4Q24, followed by commercial production in early 2025. The successful completion of Media Luna is expected to result in a return to positive free cash flow in mid-2025 as production ramps up and capital expenditures normalize,” said CEO Jody Kuzenko. #mining #metals #mexico https://lnkd.in/en7uYQtB

Americas Gold and Silver to 'expedite' #Mexico copper project due to higher prices Toronto-based Americas Gold and Silver decided to “expedite” the development of the EC120 project (ex-El Cajón) at its Cosalá operations in Sinaloa, Mexico, due to the current high silver and copper prices, the company said in a statement. “The company is in the documentation phase with a metal trader to provide concentrate prepayment financing for the entire capital requirement at its 100%-owned El Cajón and zone 120 silver-copper project (EC120 project) at the Cosalá operations,” it said. Americas Gold and Silver, which operates in Mexico and the US, expects to close the financing this quarter. It aims to complete the required development and preparations to produce higher-grade silver-copper concentrates from the project at the beginning of 2025. #mining #copper https://lnkd.in/eBeUV7Dp.

While I’m not sure the word “cuckoo” does justice to today’s copper market, today’s WSJ article does highlight some interesting recent developments. BHP’s bid for Anglo American and multiple potential bids for First Quantum’s (closed) Cobre Panama mine do illustrate the difficulty of discovering and building new copper mines. If nothing else, these bids clearly demonstrate that for many large mining companies, the “buy vs build” decision in copper is a no-brainer. And while it’s impossible to predict week-to-week moves in the copper price, we remind investors that the world has not been in a true “scarcity”-driven copper market since before the financial crisis... https://lnkd.in/eU27HnGT

The closure of the Cobre Panama mine following nationwide anti-mining protests is a case-in-point for the importance of mining companies’ community relations work. The $10 billion mine was projected to employ one in fifty workers in the country and generate 4-5% of the country’s GDP but, fatally, the operators lost the support of the population, for a myriad of avoidable reasons. The project failed to address concerns such as labour rights, which turned from protest to full-blown, national civil unrest. By resting on their laurels, First Quantum lost their social license to operate, and paid the ultimate price. Fulfilling the demand for critical raw materials created by the green energy transition will require new mining projects to be started over the next few decades. It is vital that mining companies ensure that citizens in mining communities are on side. The image of a copper mine larger than San Francisco in the Panamanian jungle sitting idle epitomises this point.
A story I've been reporting for months is in Bloomberg News this week. It's the story of how First Quantum Minerals built one of the world's largest and newest copper mines — and then saw it fall apart. The fate of Cobre Panama resonates far beyond the walls of First Quantum’s offices and the borders of Panama, highlighting a dilemma at the heart of the global transition away from fossil fuels. While governments are pushing to secure the raw materials to build electric vehicles, solar panels and high-voltage cables required for the energy transition, few of their citizens want the mines needed to produce them. But it's also a cautionary tale for the mining industry. Speaking with more than a dozen people close to First Quantum, it became clear that mistakes were made early in Cobre Panama's construction. Mistakes that strained the company's relationship with Panama's government and, by extension, its citizens. https://lnkd.in/gqRAPgbk

Scoop: First Quantum Minerals is selling one of its smaller assets, a Spanish copper mine called Las Cruces, as it seeks to bolster its balance sheet following the closure of Cobre Panama. According to sources familiar with the matter, the mine went on sale in December and has drawn interest from groups including Grupo México, the conglomerate owned by billionaire German Larrea. It's a small mine, but in a strategic location. Las Cruces is undergoing a transition from an open-pit operation that reached the end of its life in 2021 to an underground mine poised to extend its life by 18 years or more. That extension includes a refinery designed to produce approximately 72,000 tons of copper cathode annually, which is shipped as final product. Our story in Bloomberg News: https://lnkd.in/gUZ3P4SE

The Business Environment is Dynamic. On the flipside of the coin, the- "Cobre Panama’s closure was one of the key catalysts behind a global shortage of copper ore currently gripping the industry, which in turn has drawn bullish investors into the market and helped pushed metal prices to the highest point in nearly two years. The mine accounted for roughly 1.5% of the world’s supply of copper." -Bloomberg. #copper #copperexlploration #commoditymarkets #mining #hedgefunds #explorationinvestment
