Did you know? Summer poses a serious problem for food-insecure kids and families. During the school year, children who can't get enough food at home can still be supplemented through meals at school. But over the summer, they can't get the same resources they get during the rest of the year. See what Lettum Eat! is doing to help fight food insecurity in our area at lettumeat.com.

Non sibi, sed suis While resources are provided for food on-campus, there are still segments of students that experience difficulties with accessing food. As a result, a trio of students formed Students Against Food Insecurity (SAFI), which has partnered with various organizations and departments to distribute over 3,500 pounds of food to the Tulane community. In a continuation of efforts to combat food insecurity, Westchester County Executive George Latimer is rallying together with community partners to raise awareness for the invaluable programs and resources available to residents in need. Latimer said: “Too often the struggle against food insecurity is silent. You may feel alone or trapped, but you don’t have to be. Together, we can unveil the strength within Westchester, ensuring that no one faces these challenges in the dark – collectively illuminating a path towards a more resilient future." Under the Latimer administration, the priority for combatting food insecurity in Westchester began in 2018, until formally expanding into the Westchester County Food Security Initiative (FSI) in 2020. This comprehensive initiative brought an increased $5 million in funding, grant access and strategic capacity-building resources for Feeding Westchester and local food pantries at a critical time – serving to address the mounting community needs and logistical obstacles brought on by the immediacy of the pandemic. Food is a universal need that transcends age, background, address, race, gender, and societal status. We all need to eat. Yet, more than 83,700 people in Wyoming—over 14% of the population—are facing food insecurity. We've had the honor of connecting with neighbors across the state and learning firsthand about the challenges of food insecurity. Learn more in our blog linked below.

We have a story in the latest issue of Neighbourhood Media detailing all the work we do via Addison Road Food Pantry Camperdown, our low-cost grocery store which makes use of rescued, donated and purchased food to support the local community and its needs. The story (link below) shows how we help feed people from Mission Australia's Common Ground housing project and the nearby Johanna O’Dea Court, a multi-storey NSW Family and Community Services apartment block. It also explains how we serve people living on a tight budget in Camperdown and Glebe, as well as people who come to the pantry from right across the City of Sydney LGA. Most of all, the story is a celebration of our monthly Addi Road 'Let's Get Cooking' sessions (AKA "the Cook-Up"), which offers 260 free hot meals for Mission Australia and Joanna O'Dea residents, as well as those shopping at our Addi Road Food Pantry Camperdown. These sessions involve a monthly cooking demo inside the Common Ground building. Food literacy is the ultimate goal behind Addi Road's Let's Get Cooking program. As well as simply providing a free hot meal (and dessert) each month, we look at helping people to shop AND cook with often very limited funds. Each month there are easy recipes on offer (and ready to be tasted) along extra tips for stocking people's kitchen cupboards; a list of essentials to facilitate simple, inexpensive and nutritious recipes that will match whatever Addi Road Food Pantry might have in stock. It's about building an integrated food ecology for people battling. HUNGER CAN'T WAIT — The Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina - an Action Pathways Inc. program - has introduced a farmer's market at its Food Distribution Center in Fayetteville, where those facing hunger can choose fresh produce and meats, and it has been a game-changer. On average, 200 families have taken advantage of the market each time it is open, a testament to the program's success and the community's support. SHFB is committed to expanding these markets to communities in its 7-county service area where the need is urgent. In this service area, 16.7%, or over 130,000 individuals, are food insecure. Food insecurity, which the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines as “a household-level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food,” is an important public health problem and an underrecognized social determinant of health. It places a substantial burden on our society through health care and social costs. People experiencing food insecurity often consume a nutrient-poor diet, which may contribute to the development of obesity, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. People who live in food-insecure households also have difficulties in managing diet-related chronic conditions. For ECU students experiencing food insecurity, the Williams-Ross Purple Pantry is an invaluable resource. #ecu #foodinsecurity #foodpantry #highereducation
