There couldn’t be a timelier theme for International Women’s Day this year than “Inspire Inclusion.” This is something we work toward every day at Atlas – through a human-centric approach that celebrates diverse perspectives and holds leaders accountable. I see this year as a call to action for leaders to become champions of empathy, respect and fairness. “Inspire Inclusion” isn’t just a theme. It should be a mission to go beyond the numbers and ensure everyone feels valued, heard, and empowered. This is especially urgent in the context of the current backlash against DEIB, which has been brewing for a while now. Consider this: Lean In’s 2023 Women in the Workplace report found a significant drop in the number of early-career Black women being promoted to manager positions. In addition to advancing at about half the rate of men in 2022, the promotion rate fell 78% between 2021 and 2022. Stats like these should be a wake-up call to understand whether these disparities are surfacing in your organization and to identify where and why. Companies that do this work may well find that challenges related to representation are directly correlated to shortcomings in inclusion. So who’s doing great work to inspire inclusion right now? Among the many, I recently read about a group launched by Instagram’s former DEI director for Black female executives to connect, console, coach and celebrate each other. Black executives, and Black women in particular, face unique barriers associated with being “onlys”—meaning there are no other women of color among their peers. I’m familiar with that struggle, and it’s inspiring to see a place emerging where women can navigate the challenges and support each other. Women need allies and sponsors in the workplace. Fewer than half of employees at the manager level or higher act as sponsors, while only one in three employees claim to have a sponsor, according to McKinsey & Company. Additionally, Black women and women with disabilities encounter more obstacles to advancement. They receive less support from managers and sponsors compared to other women. This Women’s History Month, dedicate more time and resources to building communities for women employees and investing in their professional development. We must remember that our worth is not determined by how others perceive our qualifications, talent, or competence.
