Innovative Design Solutions for NYC's Zoning Challenges

𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐘𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐍𝐘𝐂? Yesterday, the City Council approved the second of the three "Yesses" to support local businesses and ensure that local retail streets and commercial centers remain active parts of their neighborhoods. Here are the four key goals of this proposal: 𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥 𝟏: 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰 Business owners will have more certainty about where they can locate and what they can do in their spaces. Key changes include: ▪️Simplifying rules for business types allowed on commercial streets ▪️ Enabling commercial activity on the upper floors ▪️ Simplifying business classification in zoning 𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥 𝟐: 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 Reducing obstacles for emerging business types and updating rules for home-based businesses to enable entrepreneurship. 𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥 𝟑: 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬-𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐬 Ensuring businesses contribute to active, safe, and walkable streetscapes (no more massive windowless walls!). 𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥 𝟒: 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 New zoning tools will boost job growth and business expansion, such as allowing corner stores in residential areas.
