Witnessing the Tech Brunch come to fruition on the 27th was truly fulfilling. Organized by SisterSpeaks Global & Heels4Pads Foundation and Power Learn Project in collaboration with SCA Nairobi , and various women-led tech communities, this event gathered industry experts to empower women in the tech field and support one another. Catherine Muraga , our keynote speaker, highlighted an essential lesson: prioritize depth before breadth. Achieving deep expertise in your career ensures unparalleled competency, which establishes credibility. Breadth, or broadening your skills, will come as you specialize and excel in your chosen field. Depth takes time and dedication. Women have abundant opportunities and support to advance their careers. It’s important to take advantage of these opportunities and approach them with the confidence described by Mumbi N. in her 2024 motto: "carry the audacity of mediocre men." The speed mentorship sessions were a standout for me, where tech leaders shared invaluable insights. Joylynn Kirui , in particular, shared how she accidentally found herself in cybersecurity. While she was a software developer, her project was hacked, and through "YouTube University," she learned about cyber attacks and how to secure her sites. This transition teaches us that sometimes, setbacks can lead to new opportunities and career paths. Embracing unexpected challenges can open doors to areas we might not have considered before. Spending Saturday with such empowered women, each supporting and inspiring the other, was incredible. I eagerly look forward to lighting more candles and keeping the flame of progress burning bright.

What’s the deal with women in the tech industry? What’s happening right now? Some data: 📊Globally, women only make up 20% of the tech workforce 📊Only 10.9% of tech CEOs are women 📊For every 100 men promoted, only 87 women get the same promotion 📊Only 21% of women said they believed that the tech industry was a place they could thrive Community, resources & visibility are KEY to transforming the tech industry. And how do we do this? An initiative I recently joined to this end is the Google’s Women Techmakers Ambassadors Programme (WTM). Women in the WTM programme organize events, speak up and mentor girls and other women on Gen AI, software, data, deep tech, cybersecurity, web3, product development... Only during these 9 months of 2024, in the framework of the programme there have been countless events organized, speaking ventures and mentoring sessions delivered by these Women Ambassadors. What this shows is an impact. An impact on more women joining the tech industry, networking, learning, growing their professional skills and being unstoppable. What we do here matters. And what we do together takes us further. Do you know any other programmes or initiatives that have this focus? Feel free to share them in the comments! **Note: WTM Ambassadors is a women-focused programme, but not a women-only one! Men are always welcome to join. This is a common effort, we cannot do this alone!

Today, I had the privilege of attending the SheLeadsTech conference, an enlightening experience where I was immersed in the presence of brilliant and innovative female leaders and advocates in the tech industry. Here are my takeaways: - It is crucial to have a clear intention and purpose in your pursuits - Be brave, embrace challenges and explore new opportunities. Continuously upskill yourself to stay relevant in the ever-evolving tech landscape. Practice self-leadership = take charge of your career by leading with courage and grit! - Connect with others! Be part of a supportive community (like SheLeadsTech or professional network like ISACA, etc.). This sense of belonging is crucial for personal and professional growth. - Seek guidance from mentors. Don't hesitate to reach out to individuals you admire, as their experience and insights can be invaluable. - Women bring a unique perspective to tech. Their nurturing nature, combined with technical expertise, can create a significant and positive impact in the field Beyond these takeaways, the conference offered insightful sharing and discussions on data privacy, AI regulations, ESG, and inspiring fireside chats with accomplished women who were supportive and encouraging of each other and passionate in advocating their interests in these field. I left the event feeling motivated and energized! Thank you Jenny Tan, for organizing this remarkable event. I'm also curious to learn more about the SheLeadsTech ambassador program, and I'll reach out to you for further information.
