Compare and contrast: Chardonnay Chardonnay is one of the most widely planted and versatile grape varieties in the world. Most famous for producing stellar wines in Burgundy, Chardonnay has spread across the globe to diverse climates and terroirs, its adaptability to different winemaking techniques allowing winemakers to craft a wide range of styles, from crisp and unoaked to rich, buttery wines. Traditionally, European Chardonnays were known for exhibiting a more restrained and terroir-driven style, whilst the so called ‘New World’ wines were more fruit-forward and oak-driven. Some of us will remember tasting too many over-oaked examples from Australia but, today, winemakers across the globe focus on emphasising the expression of a vineyard's unique characteristics, reflecting the soil and climate, using oak and malolactic fermentation more sparingly, and crafting impeccable wines. This makes blind tasting all the more exciting as techniques in the winery are improved and developed with each vintage. Understanding German wines is NOT easy. When I moved back to Germany from New Zealand to study oenology, it confused even me as a native German speaker. We even had to take a whole semester of wine law, because it is so complex. Probably the dryest class during my entire oenology studies... I will start small here and show you the latest version of a quality pyramid that many wineries use to structure their portfolio these days. At the base of the pyramid are the Gutswein (Estate Wines) followed by Ortswein (Village Wine) and the 🍒 "grapes" at the top are the single vineyard wines, Lagenweine. The classic Prädikatsystem (predicate system) is still in place but it is up to the winery whether they want to use it or not. If they choose to use it, the wines have to be submitted and are judged blind to see if their wine fits into the system. You probably have heard of Kabinett! More and more wineries are choosing to make "Landwein", which is technically a table wine and they refuse to follow any of the quality guidelines. They make wines free of rules to show the purest expression of their vineyards, vines, microclimate and cellar. What do some of the world’s most complex, ageworthy and in-demand wines have to do with a pair of muddy boots? Today marks the start of our Burgundy 2022 campaign. A day when wines from some of the smallest - and most famous - vineyards in the world go on sale. A day when, after months of working with producers, tasting through hundreds and hundreds of wines, they can finally be added to your cellar. It’s an exciting day, made all the more so because the wines are exquisite. Our Burgundy Buyer Adam Bruntlett reckons these are the best wines he has tasted in over a decade of working in the region. And one of the reasons why these wines are so fantastic is the mud. Soil. Dirt. Earth. Terroir. Call it what you will, what the vines grow out of is crucial to how the grapes develop, how they taste, and the ultimate quality of the finished wine. This particular pair of boots comes from Domaine Jean-Noël Gagnard, thrown off at the end of a day of hard harvesting in the fields. But the dirt that makes Burgundy so special is found throughout the region, albeit with little variations in composition that have a huge influence on the style of wines from different villages. Over the coming weeks we’ll be providing insights into Burgundy, some of the producers to keep an eye on, as well as exploring how best to build a cellar based around these fabulous bottles. Colares DOP is located next door to Lisbon and has been slowly disappearing because of the capital expansion. Today, the DOP has less than 30ha under vines and produces less than 9000 bottles per year. . Colares wines may be red or white. The sandy soils of Colares, called "chão de areia" offer protection against the phylloxera and as the consequence the vines are ungrafted. The vines have also been traditionally planted in trenches to protect them from the salty marine breezes. . The majority of Colares' red and white wines are produced with the Ramisco variety (red) and the Malvasia variety (white). . A second, harder soil type, called "chao rija", is located further inland in the Colares DOP, and Castelão is more frequently planted there. . The minimum aging requirements for the wines are as follow : . ▶️Branco: 6 months in wood and 3 months in bottle . ▶️Tinto: 18 months in wood and 6 months in bottle . . Because of their rarity and cost of production , the wines are usually sold in 50cl bottles. The whites are very saline and mineral while the red wines generally require a few years of maturation before being approchable. MADEIRA PART TWO Accordingly, Madeira wine producers added estufas and the heating process to their wineries on the island.  The names of the finest Madeira wines are taken from the four principal kinds of grapes grown on the island: Malmsey, Bual, Verdelho and Sercial. Malmsey: is a rich and luscious wine with a fine bouquet. With age it becomes spirituous and develops the characteristics of liqueurs. Malmse taste raisiny-fruity, are full-bodied, fragrant, rich and sweet with sufficient residual sugar, but well balanced.                                                                                              Bual is a full, rich, medium-coloured, and fragrant wine, best served with dessert. Connoisseurs consider Bual the most complete and intriguing of all. Verdelho is golden with a dry finish. It is an excellent “all-purpose wine that can be enjoyed as an aperitif or with soups. Verdelho wines smell of nuts, are fragrant and medium dry. Sercial is pale dry and smells of nuts. The vines for Verdelho were imported form the Rhine in Germany, while others varieties came from Crete in Greece. Pale, off-dry, medium bodied with good acid-backbone, nutty and dark in colour.  Five-year-old wines use the description of "Fine Old Madeira”. 10, 15 or 25 years old wines have the age at time of bottling on the label, as do the vintage Madeiras, which are of a single vintage year and have been aged in weed oak casks for a minimum of 21 years before bottling.  Henriques & Henriques was founded in 1850. Some of the rare old wines which the firm still possesses date back to the foundation of the family. H.M.Borges  Justino’s Blandy’s Pereira d’Oliveira Barbeito J.Faria e Filhos are the wineries, of which Henriques and Henriques is the boggest.

WEEKLY TASTING REPORT: Magnificence From the Mosel, Plus Handling the Heat in Paso Robles (Part III) Stefan Steinmetz of the Weingut Günther Steinmetz in Brauneberg is another quality fanatic in the Mosel, and although several of his top wines of the 2023 vintage were still fermenting when Stuart tasted there, they were still astonishingly deep and expressive. None is more extraordinary than the Günther Steinmetz Riesling Mosel Piesporter Treppchen Von Den Terrassen 2023. It has a gigantic stature for the wines of this region, and is the essence of slate and a miracle of finesse for its scale. This is another extremely limited-production wine, but scroll down to the tasting notes and you’ll find other great wines from this producer that will be easier to find. Selbach Oster in Zeltingen is one of the most widely distributed of the leading Mosel producers, and it has been for a long time. You might think that there would therefore be no surprises here. However, Stuart has been stunned over the past few years by the dry rieslings made by father and son team Johannes and Sebastian Selbach (photo). For Stuart, the 2023 single-vineyard GG wines are the best so far, but it was another wine that is neither properly dry nor really sweet that blew his mind. The breathtaking mineral freshness lifts the imposing stature of the Selbach-Oster Riesling Mosel Schmitt 2023 and takes you to a place of floating peace. Call it riesling nirvana if you like. It comes from a single parcel of vines in the Schlossberg site of Zeltingen. Like many of their colleagues, the Selbachs are still a bit stunned by the wines they made in 2023. I know most of us associate Argentina with Malbec, but there is so much more than Malbec! Probably my 2 favorite varietals - both not normally associated with Argentina are Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. All three varietals are traditional Bordeaux varietals, brought to Argentina and blossomed there. Where Cabernets from more cold weather climates tend to be very green and herbaceous, Cabs from Argentina tend to be deep, full of dark chocolate and paprika notes and less on those green, herbaceous notes. Same with Petit Verdot which can also have a very green taste from cold weather climates, here in Argentina it takes on a ripe, and complex character with loads of dark fruit and licorice characteristics. Here's a great review of Tapiz Alta Cabernet Sauvignon, owned by Argentine wine industry great Patricia Freuler de Ortiz, and made by winemaker Fabian Valenzuela and famed Bordeaux winemaker Jean Claude Berrouet of Petrus. Berrouet by the way only works with Patricia's wines in Argentina!
