Going beyond old notions of "#work-#life #balance" There’s an old misconception that “work–life balance” means spending equal amounts of time on work and non-work life (like balancing out two sides of a measuring scale), but that’s not true. A good work-life balance for women involves prioritizing well-being, setting boundaries and embracing flexibility. It's about recognizing that personal and professional success coexist harmoniously, allowing women to thrive in their careers while nurturing a fulfilling and meaningful life beyond the workplace.

Redefining the ‘Work-Life Balance’ for Women: Beyond the 9-5 For too long, the idea of “work-life balance” has been defined by rigid hours and the expectation that we can neatly compartmentalize work and life. But for women, especially those managing their health, careers, families, and everything in between, the 9-5 model just doesn’t cut it anymore. It’s about embracing flexibility and understanding that balance can look different every single day. Whether it’s taking the time to prioritize our health when our hormones need it, setting boundaries with our work, or simply allowing ourselves to rest without guilt—real work-life balance honors the whole woman, not just her productivity. This post by #simonsinek made me reflect deeply on what psychological safety really means in all spaces. Especially for working women, work is sometimes a much needed break away from home: to feel valued, build their identity, find economic stability and a sense of community. Work life balance is not just about balancing time, but actually about #psychologicalsafety - to be a whole human being, to voice ideas, contribute with gusto, get fair feedback and be understood by their managers and organizations. #wholebeingwellbeing #peoplephilosophy #organizationdevelopment #feministleadership

5 Key Takeaways from Our Work-Life Balance Workshop There's no one-size-fits-all for the "perfect woman." It's about accepting and communicating with everyone around us, whether at work or at home. Here are the 5 impactful insights that really got us thinking during our speaking workshop; 1️⃣ The “perfect woman” who “has it all” does not exist. We need support from our loved ones, colleagues and society to help us achieve work-life balance. 2️⃣ Work-life balance for women is often shaped by gender roles set in society. To break the barrier, we need to realise that work-life balance is deeply personal and looks different for every woman. 3️⃣ At the workplace, we need to practice open communication and be supportive to one another. Employees and employers should also set boundaries between work vs personal time and be open to flexible working hours. 4️⃣ Career goals and progression looks different for every individual, depending on their own value system and the current stage of their life. 5️⃣ We need to appreciate the women who help us at home. Foreign domestic workers are the support pillar for many Singaporean families, and we must maintain healthy communication with them to also help them achieve work-life balance. Let's keep supporting each other and keep growing in our own spaces 🙌🏼 #worklifebalance #careergoals #womenleaders

Work-Life Balance: Rethinking the Emphasis The topic of work-life balance is often overly emphasized, especially concerning working women. Every time I encounter a conference session on this topic, I find myself questioning: have we not moved on? Even after a decade, we’re still discussing it. To all the women striving for perfection, let me share a reality check: a perfect work-life balance is a myth. It's an ideal so ingrained in our minds that we constantly seek an impossible equilibrium. There are days when you have to prioritize that critical meeting over a family birthday dinner. There are days when family comes first, and deadlines are missed. There are days when a long-awaited coffee with a friend is the priority. There are days when late-night projects mean missing a child's goodbye before school. Every day presents a new set of priorities. In the quest for work-life balance, one aspect often takes precedence over the other, and that's perfectly okay. Let’s focus our energy on today’s priorities and move beyond this long-overdue conversation. #worklofebalance #workingwomen #myth #prioritiessetstraight

𝙒𝙝𝙤 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙥𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠-𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚 𝙗𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚? The term "work-life balance" gained prominence in the United Kingdom during the 1980s, driven by the Women's Liberation Movement advocating for flexible schedules and maternity leave to address women's dual work and home responsibilities. The concept of work-life balance has deeper historical roots. In the early 19th century, Welsh reformer Robert Owen advocated for an eight-hour workday with his slogan: "eight hours labor, eight hours recreation, eight hours rest," pioneering the idea of balanced time distribution. Lillian Moller Gilbreth, an early 20th-century industrial psychologist and engineer, significantly contributed to the foundation of work-life balance by emphasizing workers' well-being in industrial management. Although these early efforts laid the groundwork, the specific phrase "work-life balance" was coined in 1986, reflecting a growing awareness of balancing professional and personal responsibilities.
