HR Generalists or HR Specialists? I was reading an article from Kris Dunn (VP of HR Type who has led HR practices in Fortune 500 companies and venture capital-held startups) who believes that the HR Generalist is the most important component of HR in any company. While he gave a shoutout to HR Specialists and emphasized that he loved them too, he highlighted that “a trusted HR generalist, who has developed a relationship of trust, is always the first call”. An important question arises here: What does he mean by HR Generalists and how do they differ from HR Specialists? I was wondering about this question and realized that it would be a good topic to expand on, especially for those who are considering a career path in HR and are interested in becoming an HR professional. In short, an HR Generalist is someone who has general knowledge and expertise in all core HR discipline. On the other hand, an HR Specialist is highly experienced and skilled in administration and execution of certain areas of HR, like Training & Development, Payroll, Recruitment, etc. However, as an HR Specialist you can focus only on one or two aspects of HR and develop your knowledge and skills in depth. But HR Generalists are more flexible in their skill sets and play their role based on the organization’s needs and choice or market opportunities. Therefore, there are 2 main routes for individuals who want to explore a career in HR. While there is certainly no advice on which is better, you can find the article below published by SHRM to better understand the parameters you should keep in mind to start your career as an HR professional. Here’s the link to the article in SHRM. https://lnkd.in/dFVV5YqK To wrap up, whether HR Generalists or HR Specialists hold more senior positions depends on how the HR department is structured and what strategies it follows. As an HR professional, it's important to decide whether you want to pursue a generalist role, where you handle various HR tasks, or specialize in a specific area. This decision will shape your career path in HR. I would appreciate your comments and thoughts regarding this topic. #HR #HR_Generalist #HR_Specialist

Happy HR Professionals day to all those working in HR/People roles. I’ve had plenty of conversations in the last few years with HR managers and directors and it really made me realise that you spend so much time looking after the people in your organisations who looks after you. So as a little treat for those in the HR group we run there’s a coffee on us! On a serious note if HR/People teams report in to you do you check in with them and support their development as much as they support the wider teams. If you don’t have HR in your organisation this is a just a feel for some of the areas they get involved with: ✅Creating and maintaining a positive working environment ensuring people are engaged motivated and supported ✅Responsible for recruiting onboarding and retaining talent ✅Lead on creating an L&D strategy to develop your teams ✅Keep up to date with employment law which is ever changing ✅Champion diversity equity and inclusion ✅Guide business through challenging times such as covid ✅Ensure your compensation package is relevant and competitive ✅Provide emotional and psychological support Fair to say businesses would be pretty lost without them! #hrprofessionalsday

At Landmark HR, we often encounter the pivotal question: "To outsource or to build an in-house HR team?" It's a strategic decision that every business faces, and thanks to a fantastic piece by SHRM we've gained some insightful data to guide us. Key takeaways from the SHRM article: ✅ The ideal HR staff number ranges between 1.5 to 4.5 per 100 employees, striking a sweet spot for efficiency. ✅ A significant insight: an 11% rise in HR headcount since 2018 signals the growing importance of HR in today’s workplace. ✅ The balancing act is crucial – too few HR members lead to higher turnover, yet too many can make HR appear too specialized and inaccessible. 🔍 The study also highlights a fascinating trend: industries with large, low-wage workforces are ramping up their HR teams, a proactive response to the dynamic labor market post-pandemic. 🔄 Interestingly, turnover rates dip when there's at least one HR professional per 200 employees, but start to climb again when the ratio exceeds nine HR members for the same number. It seems there's a golden ratio for HR staffing! 💡 Outsourcing vs. In-House: PEOs (Professional Employer Organizations) offer a strategic advantage by managing routine HR tasks. This allows your in-house HR team to focus on what they do best – strategic people management and nurturing your company culture. So, we pose the question to you – in light of these insights, would you consider outsourcing your HR, or would you opt for an in-house team? How many HR staff members would be your ideal number? Join the discussion below and let's unlock the potential of strategic HR staffing together! 🚀 Link to article: https://lnkd.in/eG-2Kv3c #HRStaffing #StrategicHR #HumanResources #BusinessGrowth #PEO #InHouseVROutsourcing #WorkforceManagement #SHRM

Today is International HR Day -- As someone who entered the HR space later in their career, I can tell you that HR is often undervalued and misrepresented as just the "Company Police" or the "function in charge of all things fun". However, a great HR function can bring a lot of value to an organization by fostering a positive work environment, attracting/retaining top talent, and driving strategic initiatives that propel the organization forward. Let's take a moment to appreciate the hard work and dedication of our HR team members. If you have an HR team member, take a second to remind them of what they mean to you. #InternationalHRDay

It's International HR Day today and despite a couple of centuries of change, it seems that the purpose of HR hasn't really altered since Robert Owen and Charles Babbage (yes, that Charles Babbage) concluded that people are crucial to the success of an organisation and that the well-being of workers directly relates to an organisation's ability to survive. It can be easy to think of the term "well-being" as a recent focus, perhaps even a new buzzword for the post-pandemic "new normal", so it's an important and happy reminder that this has always been at the heart of the field of HR. There are many functions under the HR umbrella but as recruiters, it's the area of talent acquisition where most of our HR relations lie. So to all our HR contacts, both our clients and of course our HR candidates, we hope you have a Happy International HR Day today. #escaperecruitment #internationalHRday #hr #humanresources #hrcareers #wellbeing

https://lnkd.in/gx8_DYnZ ... I AGREE with the range 1.5 to 4.5 HR staff per 100 employees. It is guided by industry, company size, the mix of HRBPs vs. specialist, and the HR functional resources necessary to efficiently and prudently execute the people strategy (to complement the business strategy). Respectfully, Darryl

As I read the recent NYT article on how HR is making everyone miserable, including those in HR, it saddens me to see HR continuously perceived negatively. When I started my career, like many with “seasoned experience,” we were seen as the team that ensured everyone was paid and protocols were followed. Reflecting on HR's trajectory, we should celebrate our achievements, especially in the last 5+ years, rather than complain. Let's be realistic—no job is easy. HR is ever-evolving, navigating political, regulatory, and people landscapes. While no one is an expert, many HR talents strive to handle the most complex business aspect: people. HR 101: You can't please everyone, but you can create an inclusive, supportive environment. HR walks a tightrope between corporate and employee needs, delivering tough corporate messages and voicing employee grievances to the C-Suite. From dealing with serious issues like harassment to organizing company events, HR handles it all. Despite the challenges, let's recognize the dedication and compassion that drives HR professionals. #HumanResources #HRInsights #EmployeeEngagement #WorkplaceCulture #PeopleManagement #HRLeadership #Inclusion #WorkplaceWellbeing
