The Story Of The VC10 By Paolo Cevoli - October 2024 I know I said I’d take a break from writing, but I couldn’t resist. After chatting with a friend about the VC10, such an iconic aircraft in British aviation, I had to turn our conversation into an article. The history and performance of this aircraft really caught my interest, and I had to share it with you. I hope you enjoy the following article. The Vickers VC10, often called one of Britain’s best airliners, played a key role in the aviation world during the 1960s and 1970s. Designed and built by Vickers-Armstrongs, it first entered service with BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) in April 1964, before BOAC merged with British Airways in 1974. The VC10 stood out in many ways, especially for its 4 rear-mounted engines, a rare feature for commercial jets of the time. This made the cabin quiet and comfortable, a clear benefit for passengers. This design also gave the VC10 excellent performance, particularly on short runways and in hot climates across Africa and the Middle East, where other aircraft struggled. Known for its great handling and speed, the VC10 could cruise at around 580 mph (933 km/h), making it one of the fastest subsonic airliners of its time. Its ability to climb steeply after take-off made it perfect for airports with tough surroundings, like Nairobi, Entebbe, and Beirut. With a range of over 5,000 miles, British Airways could operate the VC10 on top routes from London to Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and even New York. The VC10’s cabin reflected the glamour of air travel at the time, seating around 150 passengers in two classes. The rear engines not only made for a quieter ride but also offered a smoother experience, with less vibration than other jets of that era. One fun fact: the VC10 held the record for the fastest subsonic transatlantic crossing at just over 5 hours, a record that lasted for years. With its striking T-tail and sleek fuselage, the VC10 was a favourite among both passengers and crew. Though it retired from commercial service in 1981, the VC10 left a lasting legacy, with many still remembering its stylish design and top performance. Some VC10s even continued serving the RAF as refuelling tankers until 2013, bringing nearly 50 years of service to a close. A true icon of British aviation, the VC10 is definitely part of history. · · · #aviation #avgeek #aviationgeek #travel #cabincrew

Hi Fly ferried an A380 in a historical flight across 5000 nautical miles from Mojave Desert Airport to Prestwick via Montreal Mirabel. The ferry flight, conducted by Commander Carlos Mirpuri and supported by Captains Antonios Efthymiou, João Domingues, and Engineer Brian Dellaringa, is the culmination of a multi-month process that involved a team of experts from Hi Fly and Global, working intensively over 12 months to make it happen. The fact that jacks were not available in the Mojave meant that the Global Airline’s A380-841 9H-GLOBL had to be ferried to Prestwick where it will undergo further maintenance before returning to the skies. The first flight from MHV-YMX had a total flight time of 05h40 and around 2150 nautical miles. Second flight from YMX-PIK had a total flight time of 07h44 and around 2800 nautical miles. Additional flight time was planned to avoid demanding weather, such as thunderstorms and severe icing. The flights were operated with the gear down ahead of the required maintenance, thus slower and at lower altitude, and the need for a fuel stop.
