What would you do if your two year old was dying? Fight! right?! 💪
I heard an interesting article on 4BH 882 yesterday.
About a two year old child with a rare form of cancer (40 children per year in Australia are affected). Luna has spent most of her life in hospital and is gearing up again for yet another round of treatment. She's lost a kidney and adrenal glands, had multiple rounds of chemo, a bone marrow transplant, 12 rounds of radiation, and is headed into immunotherapy.
There is a treatment in America (DFMO) that could save Luna's life (and the other children in Australia) but unfortunately, when the health minister Hon Mark Butler MP was petitioned on behalf of the family, their request for $15 million to bring the potentially life-saving treatment to Australia was rejected. (Ironically, the Minister was snapped at the Cancer Australia 'Launch of the Australian Comprehensive Cancer Network' earlier this week: https://lnkd.in/gnXY8MpX)
During the interview, host Peter Gleeson made a great point that Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has just committed $450 million to "buy a couple of planes"..... "given $60 million to the union movement".... "there's something 'bang up wrong' with these priorities..."
Certainly, as a taxpayer, I would prefer to see my tax dollars go toward broadening the treatment options available to Australian families experiencing situations like Luna's family, rather than, say for example, spending money on the upkeep of criminals in immigration detention. I know it's a complex issue, but does it really need to be?
Listening to the interview, it sounded to me that Luna's parents are guarded, operating in survival mode - almost like if they let their pain shine through, it'll all unravel and their ability to get through the coming months for their daughter will be in jeopardy.
Can you believe this family needs to raise $500k (minimum) to save their daughter's life? 😢 So far, less than 2% of the goal has been raised
In the short term, the call is out for donations and I'm sharing here because I can't imagine the living horror of knowing a potential solution exists, but it's an option only if you have money.

And fingers crossed, we see some different policy decisions from the Australian Government in these matters!
