Dr. Neda Nikpoor: A Visionary in the Fight Against Global Blindness Dr. Nikpoor, a passionate cornea cataract and refractive surgeon, has known she wanted to be an ophthalmologist since she was 19. Driven by her association with the Himalayan Cataract Project, a nonprofit organization, she dedicates her life to eradicating global blindness. Her greatest joy comes from treating patients in the developing world who suffer from white cataracts. With 13 million people worldwide still affected by cataract-induced blindness, Dr. Nikpoor's mission is clear: to perform life-changing surgeries that take just five to ten minutes and cost a mere $25, offering the gift of sight to those in need. Ninety percent of these people live in low- and middle-income communities where access to eye care is limited, and the challenges for those who can’t see are severe. But there is hope – 80% of this burden is treatable or preventable.

World Sight Day, observed annually on the second Thursday of October, raises global awareness about the importance of eye health, the prevention of blindness, and the need for accessible eye care services. Here are key reasons why this day is significant: 1. Raising Awareness: It highlights the global burden of vision impairment, with millions of people affected by preventable or treatable conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, or uncorrected refractive errors. 2. Advocacy for Eye Care Access: The day encourages governments and organizations to improve access to eye care, particularly in underserved areas where people may not have regular access to vision services. 3. Focus on Preventive Care: Many vision issues can be prevented or managed if detected early. World Sight Day promotes routine eye exams and healthy habits, such as managing diabetes and using protective eyewear. 4. Encouraging Donations and Support: Organizations and nonprofits often use this occasion to fundraise and mobilize resources for eye health programs, including providing glasses or surgeries for those in need. 5. Highlighting the Social and Economic Impact: Good vision is essential for education, employment, and quality of life. Addressing visual impairment can reduce poverty and promote economic development, as better eyesight enables individuals to be more productive. 6. Promoting the “Love Your Eyes” Campaign: In recent years, campaigns like "Love Your Eyes" emphasize personal responsibility by encouraging everyone to prioritize their eye health and seek regular checkups. World Sight Day fosters collective action, helping bridge gaps in global eye care and ensuring that vision health is recognized as a key component of overall well-being.

Today, May 17th, is NEC Awareness Day. Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) is a severe and sometimes fatal medical condition that usually afflicts premature or medically fragile infants, with an inverse relationship between the infant's age and their risk for NEC, i.e., the younger the baby, the higher the risk. Strictly speaking, it is a disease of prematurity. Some babies survive NEC, and unfortunately some succumb to it. Probiotics have been shown to significantly lower the risk for NEC, but they have not yet been fully recognized and accepted as a prophylactic treatment. There is still much to learn about this condition. To quote the NEC Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the eradication of NEC: "Our vision is to build a world without NEC". May it be so as soon as possible. For more information, visit: NEC Society: https://lnkd.in/dC8vQ-G8 NEC UK: https://lnkd.in/d243Vqbr #neonatology #prematurity #necrotizingenterocolitis
