So few companies contribute to their communities. These things should be celebrated more
We were able to volunteer this week at the Northern Illinois Food Bank with our team from Colorado Technical University and Perdoceo Education Corporation. Excellent facility and staff helping those in need across 13 counties in Northern Illinois. We packed 6,912 lbs of protien to provide 5,760 meals.

Last weekend my spouse took our little early-riser (she’s 5), to the local diner for breakfast while my son and I were still sleeping. When they returned home, she came bursting through the doorway shouting, “MOMMY! MOMMY! I’VE GOT A SURPRISE FOR YOU!” Smiling at me as if she had just won the lottery, she then handed me 3 crayons (Pictured below). This action is evidence that children pay attention to absolutely everything you do as a parent. Backstory: One of my quirks that my spouse chuckles about is my inability to leave the free crayons at a restaurant after we’ve dined with our children. No matter where we go, if my kids are given free crayons (that will be disposed of after our departure)… I bring them home. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. The thought of throwing out an item so small that give my children so much joy, seems insanely wasteful. Therefore, I bring them home for a second shot at life. My children love it since they never run out of crayons and I feel better that at least 2 less packs of crayons will be added to our landfills each time we dine out. At the time, I didn’t realize there was actually a lessen to be learned here. Your children will replicate the behaviors you exhibit. So make sure you are teaching them to be good and thoughtful humans that pay attention to what brings others joy. Teach them empathy and compassion. Teach them not to be wasteful. Teach them to be conscious of areas in life where even their small actions have can have impacts. Even if it’s something as simple as bringing home used crayons 🖍️

https://lnkd.in/gHAyAP-Q Look at the excitement here on receiving a jar of pickles for Christmas! Young children see the world much differently than us and can truly appreciate the simple pleasures in life. And if adults were able to do that more, there is research to show that not only can this offset small annoyances we have throughout the day, but it can also help us make better progress toward our goals. And these are simple, low-cost activities such as taking a walk outside or having tea with a friend. Counterintuitively, when your to-do list is too long, and you eliminate these types of activities, you may make less progress toward your goals. Research: https://lnkd.in/gGmFpYVu

Happy #FACSfamFriday, everyone! Next to enter our spotlight is Sean Baker! Sean is an Environmental Health Specialist I, CV-WFS PM, and is out of the Fresno office. Check out Sean's responses to our questions below, as well as a photo of him with his family at a Choctaw Nation gathering. Do you have any questions for Sean or other FACS employees you'd like to see answered in the next #FACSfamFriday? Let us know by commenting on this post. What is one thing we don't know about you (non-work-related)? I technically do not have a middle name, my full first name is Sean-Paul (yes like the rapper but less musically talented and A LOT less rich). What is one thing that you geek out about? I wouldn't say I geek out (because I don't know every detail or stat) but I love watching Sports and can talk about them for hours, especially the NFL What is your favorite store to shop at in-person or virtually? oh I would say hands down it is Amazon. Everything is just right there a couple clicks away...very dangerous! If you were a super-hero, what power would you want? Well as a guy who has read a lot of comics that is a tough question, but I would have to say LOBO. He is the most well rounded super powered character (strength, regeneration and healing factor, immortality, weapons expert, a long list of etc.) What is your favorite random fact? You can't hum while holding your nose.

Are you also missing that slice (scoop?) of Americana? According to a study by Good Humor, nearly 70% of respondents said they noticed fewer ice cream trucks in their neighborhood, and two-thirds of them said they would be upset or sad to see ice cream trucks become a thing of the past. Read more in Phaedra Trethan's story: https://lnkd.in/evAGXwHA But no worries, the summer treat is not going anywhere, just the business model is evolving. "They need to change tactics on how they do business. Being parked or driving around neighborhoods isn't enough anymore," said Steve Christensen, executive director of the North American Ice Cream Association. 📸: Chris Lachall/USA TODAY Network

Lesson of the year so far, always invest in your future through consumer education. Not gonna lie, we made gutter guards cool in Sacramento. What started as a “Have you seen this before?” became “Do you have it yet?” All fun and games until the competition finds out. Now, I see a new gutter company almost EVERY week! Now it’s “Which kind do you have” and “Ouch, let me show you what’s wrong with that one.” Luckily #LeafFilter has an industry leading patent so it’s an easy conversation to have. However, the hard part is convincing yourself that this educational conversation (non-qualified lead can’t write it up) is worth your time despite that person not being quote-ready for another 6 months. I end those conversations with a friendly, but stern “Remember who told you about that”. With our current momentum I can’t help but feel this approach paying off. March was HARD but we made it! First quarter down! Jan ✅ Feb ✅ Mar ✅ #inthegreen #hittargets #triplegreen #battingathousand

Bay Head Barnacle. Just trying to figure it all out by searching for a cosmic connection between nature, my pictures of the sunrise in particular, and the stock market for that day. Hope you enjoy.
Celebrating freedom does not come cheap It wouldn’t be July 4th without barbecues and fireworks and despite the sky rocketing price increases people will spend to honor and celebrate. We all have a neighbor who throws a backyard fireworks display, permits? We don’t need no stinkin’ permits! Well as you watch and hope he knows what he is doing know that “During the first four months of 2024, the bulk price jumped 42% — more than twice the overall increase in the U.S. inflation rate. Add in rising labor costs at fireworks stands, and these three explanations make it clear why fireworks use is down since the pandemic's peak.” - US Fireworks. Food “Not even Fourth of July barbecues are immune to inflation. Americans feeding a group of 10 this holiday weekend will spend an average of $71.22, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation. It's a record high: 5% more than last year.” - 6ABC Philadelphia” We back of the enveloped the 5-year percentage changes for each food item from 2019 to 2024 on the following core BBQ items: Beef: Up approximately 37.28%. Pork: UP approximately 34.69%. Chicken Breast: US approximately 32.41% Potato Chips: Up approximately 50.66% — yes, potato chips are not only a staple, they are a necessity!!! Happy 4th of July. Enjoy every single tasty bite and every exploding firework and most of all “stay safe.” May the 4th be with you. God Bless America and God Bless you.
