Good Friday in the city of Manchester! This talk provided a valuable refresher on lessons I’ve learned throughout my professional journey and personal experiences. Steven Bartlett covered a wide range of interesting topics: procrastination, motivation, hiring, team-building, lonely at the top, attention to detail, and even some more deeper subjects like quitting and death. I could write about all of them, but one particular topic that resonated with me was talent acquisition & building high performing teams. Steven highlighted the importance of investing time and effort into the recruitment process. While industry opinions may vary – some advocating for swift hires after minimal interaction; I've always believed in completing a thorough recruitment process. Experience has taught me that not only will it save you time and money in the long run, but also that my role as a leader is to set-up people for success from the start. One of the key elements of my recruitment process was to understand the environment necessary for the candidate to thrive and succeed. Everyone is unique so you can’t take a blanket view on this, equally some of the most talented individuals out there might not be right for the environment you are bringing them into. For me as a leader, the recruitment process is preparatory work for me. It's about determining what I need to do to ensure the success of the individual I'm bringing into my team or organization. Wow! I appreciate all of the kind words and support on my recent announcement. So, what’s next? My wife, best friend, and life partner Erin Coupe created Authentically EC Inc. right before the pandemic. It’s a bespoke consulting practice which focuses on modern leadership, professional development and personal growth for both companies and individual executives. I will be stepping into a Chief Growth Officer & Ops role within the company. Initially, most of my attention will be centered around new partnerships across North America and expanding Erin’s B2B and B2C offerings. For the lion share of my career, I have focused my attention on lease negotiations, office design and aesthetics, and workplace experience which all impact a company’s office dynamics. Most of these efforts concentrated on the physical realm - company leases X square footage, in this preferred location, drawn to this layout & design, and curb appeal. As a former college athlete, I have always been fascinated by team dynamics. What drives high performance and overall success outside of just physical ability and talent. In my next chapter, I will be shifting my attention towards people and mindset, while tackling two of the biggest blind spots in the workplace, leadership and accountability. These two elements, often ignored and neglected, are essential to each company’s evolution, culture, and success.
