Q: How can I show increasing levels of responsibility without having been promoted? A: If you haven't been promoted yet then ask to head up a special project, or work on a specific initiative that solves a problem. The idea is to demonstrate leadership! Whenever you are solving a problem, you are demonstrating leadership. It’s also beneficial to show that you've been vetted to move forward with that. Teaching a team of people a particular software or having a leadership role in an ERG are also good. Given the teamwork focus of the MBA, mentoring others in any capacity is something most schools particularly value. There's a lot you can do without being promoted to demonstrate leadership. I always recommend that people take part in community-related extracurriculars because the MBA program is a community and they want to know that you are going to be engaged and motivated in their community, without necessarily being paid. It's also an amazing opportunity for you to get leadership experience more quickly than you might in a corporate setting (especially if you work for a large, hierarchical company.) It can provide some really great stories for your MBA applications, and even help you gain experience in a realm that you want to pursue post MBA. My MBA journey - Reflecting on Failures and Growth: 📍 During my first year of MBA, I suffered heavily because of academic intensity, trying to adjust to the fast pace of the program and transitioning into a different lifestyle altogether 📍 No matter how much I tried to stay positive, I ended up comparing myself to others and being nervous and anxious 📍 There were days when I did not feel like doing anything at all which only made me feel worse 📍 During my summer internship, I poured my heart and soul into the project, but unfortunately it did not translate into a PPO 📍 I participated in several corporate case competitions, investing countless hours preparing and strategising. Despite my best efforts, I didn’t always clinch the top spot Failure was a constant companion on this journey but it was also my greatest teacher. It allowed me to seek support, develop coping mechanisms, revisit my strategies of doing things and developing within me a willingness to learn and improve. As I step into the professional world, I carry these lessons with me, knowing that every challenge is an opportunity for growth. Remember, behind every smiling face you see on social media, there is a person facing their own challenges. Let this be a gentle nudge to practise kindness towards yourself and others. Joining a B-School?? Worried about what to expect in the next 2 years?? As I reflect on my time at XLRI, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences, knowledge, and connections I have gained. Here are some key takeaways from my journey so far: 1. Academics: The curriculum at XLRI, or any B-school, is rigorous and transformative. There will be courses that suit your previous work experience—in my case, probability or operations—and there will be courses that will be completely new, such as finance. It may seem intimidating at first, but I personally feel that anyone can ace any course irrespective of their background if they put in the effort, especially in projects and assessments (and believe me, there are a lot of them). 😅 2. Extracurricular Activities: Beyond academics, a B-school like XLRI offers numerous opportunities for personal growth. For me, being part of the student council and interacting with students across committees and admin has been a highlight. These activities have helped me develop leadership skills and a sense of community, along with an opportunity to interact with not only my batch but with admin and professors as well. 3. Networking Opportunities: XLRI's strong alumni network and mentorship programs have been incredibly beneficial, especially during the Summer Internship Placement (SIP) season. You can reach out to seniors and super seniors for tips on interviews, CV prep, and live projects. These connections have provided me with guidance, support, and opportunities to grow professionally. 4. SIP Prep and Live Projects: Preparation for the Summer Internship Placements (SIP) and engaging in live projects have been crucial parts of my MBA journey. The rigorous SIP prep sessions, mock interviews, and CV workshops conducted by seniors and alumni have been invaluable. Additionally, live projects have offered practical exposure and the chance to apply classroom learnings to real-world scenarios, enhancing my problem-solving and analytical skills. As I continue my MBA journey, I am excited to apply these learnings and experiences to my career.
