I listened to Corey Hoffsteins podcast featuring Martin Tarlie on bridging the gap between financial planning and portfolio management. Very insightful. It changed the way I think of risk. Risk was delineated as not having what you need when you need it, which greatly contrasts my perspective of risk which largely revolves around the volatility of a market. The ideas shared about a linear utility function between pain and every dollar the wealth target is undershot vs no added benefit for every dollar you overshoot is such a strange concept for me to wrap my head around. I wouldn't expect undershooting and pain to be linear, I picture it as a steep curve that flattens the further away an individual is from their goal. I also perceive the steepness of the curve when overshooting wealth targets to be tied to the financial position of the investor, not non existent.
