Excited to share that Diageo is constructing a greenfield 2.0mhl/a brewery in Ireland!  ·       Project Ambition: Diageo is developing a new 2.0mhl/a brewery in Ireland, with the initial volumes being Ale & Lager. The brewery will be leading in terms of energy efficiency and low water usage. ·       Sustainability: The brewery will implement Diageo’s sustainable vision for 2030 compliance via the use of technologies such as Renewable heating plant, heat pumps, biogas boilers and water recovery technology. ·       Energy Innovations: Project Black will implement best-in-class energy and water innovations, delivering a Carbon Neutral Solution with an approx. 50% reduction in energy consumption. ·       Reduced Water Usage: Water recovery up to 80% of the brewery effluent, segregation of product and service water with further segregation for pushouts, improved water ratio. ·       Embodied Carbon: Project Black will be light-housing Embodied Carbon tracking to help reach 2030 Sustainability targets, with a pledge to reduce Scope 3 emissions by 50%. 

Never Underestimate The Importance of Timing As we head into a wonderful thanksgiving break let me share some thoughts and a story about the importance of timing in business. I remember my HBS mentor, Professor Bill Sahlman, told us in Entrepreneurial Finance that it is more important to be ready to act when the market is ready than trying to time an exit based on when you think the company is “ready”. There are windows of opportunity in business that open and close irrespective of how your business is performing. Capitalizing on those windows can create great enterprise value. To make my point let me share a story about the craft brewing industry. As many of you know San Diego is known as the “Capital of Craft” and home to over 150 craft breweries. Back in 2013-2015 there was a wave of acquisitions or consolidations by big breweries and distributors to try to acquire their own craft brewer. At the HBS Club of San Diego we had the opportunity to meet and hear from several of the local craft brewing CEO’s. The largest craft brewer’s CEO told our group that he was not interested in selling and did not want to be tempted by the money. Another brewer, one of the top 5 craft brewers, said he wanted to wait for about another 3 years to exit as he expected to be about 40-50% bigger by then.  I told him in my experience it was more important to get the exit timing right based on market dynamics rather than an internal volume goal. He decided to wait. Well Constellation Brands, a major distributor, had not yet secured their craft brewer but was actively looking at San Diego brewers for their “craft beer brand”. The #1 San Diego brewer rebuffed them. Constellation Brands subsequently bought Ballast Point for $1 billion in 2015. The valuation was off the charts. A few years later, Constellation brands sold Ballast Point for an estimated $100 million with over $50 million as a seller note to Kings & Convicts, a small brewer out of Chicago. The #1 Brand recently sold for $165 million, a fraction of the $1+ billion they might have sold for if they had sold when the market right. The valuations drops were largely driven by market dynamics not underlying performance. So, to CEO and Entrepreneurs as you enjoy your turkey, never underestimate the importance of timing. Have a Happy Thanksgiving

Pre-pandemic the #brewing and craft beer industries were booming, with hundreds of new #breweries appearing, bars opening, and a growing market share. Now, navigating the post-pandemic landscape and in the midst of a cost of business and cost of living crisis, the picture is very different. 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙣’𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙨 𝙨𝙖𝙡𝙚 𝙤𝙛 40% 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙗𝙧𝙚𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙅𝙑: 😎 🍻 Marston's PLC’s has completed the sale of its remaining non-core brewing assets to Carlsberg for £206m in cash, as it looks to create a business entirely focused on pubs. In July, Marston’s announced the sale of its 40% stake in Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company (CMBC), which was formed in 2020, as it establishes “a purely focused pub business with a strong position in the UK market and significant opportunities for further growth” and delivers on the company’s stated de-leverage strategy creating a “stronger balance sheet and a step change in financial flexibility”. Completion of the deal was targeted before the end of September 2024 and Marston’s has said the disposal has completed. Marston’s said it will continue its strong partnership with CMBC through the long-term brand distribution agreement that remains in place. The valuation on the deal represents an enterprise value multiple of 14.5 times Ebitda and 24.3 times Ebit for the 12-month period ended 31 December 2023.
