I'd like to start by saying, this is a post for awareness ; not for acknowledgement. Recently, I had the privilege of donating my hair to 'Kids with Cancer | Wigs 4 Kids' - an initiative that holds immense significance for those battling the challenges of cancer every day. I frequent my local hair salon for a simple, not-so-fancy haircut. Specialty salons with tie-ups to wig makers might seem like the only option for hair donation, but that could be far from the truth. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I could make a difference right from my own home. All it took was a ponytail and a pair of scissors. After securing my hair in a ponytail, I made the cut and packaged it up to be sent straight to the wigmaker through regular AusPost. It was that simple, that easy. This experience taught me a valuable lesson: hair donation is for everyone. Regardless of where you get your haircut, whether it's at a high-end salon or your local neighborhood spot, you can make a meaningful impact. It's a testament to the power of simplicity and inclusivity in spreading love and support to those in need. ✌️ Day 2 of posting on LinkedIn to favour the algorithm — let's go! A few years ago I donated my hair to Cancer Council Victoria. I was so excited about giving my hair to someone in need. But to my surprise, when the Cancer Council donation kit arrived, there was only a poster and coin donation box included. (I was going to go to my local hairdresser, not a Sustainable Salons hairdresser. Therefore I would be posting my hair donation myself, which was allowed.) So the question of the hour was; how was I going to send plats of hair to the Sustainable Salons HQ in Sydney, without the package being a weirdly suspicious clump of hair...? 😵💫 From a customer journey point of view, the experience highlighted a gap. There was no branded solution to send the donation myself. It made me feel forced to use a registered Sustainable Salons hairdresser, constricting my donation journey. What I was expecting in the donation kit was something like this — a ready-made parcel that would allow me to send my hair donation independently. (I actually made a mock-up and sent it with my donation back in 2021.) As we enter October, I'm reminded of the power of community and the impact we can make when we come together for a cause. This month marks the start of Hockey Fights Cancer, an initiative that unites the hockey community in support of cancer patients and their families. I'm proud to share that my son, Max, is participating in the "October Saves" challenge as part of this broader initiative. As the goalie for the Worcester Railers Mite Blue team, he's pledged to make 50 saves in 4 games this month, with each save raising funds for cancer research and patient support programs. This experience has taught our family valuable lessons: The importance of giving back to our community How sports can be a powerful vehicle for social good The resilience and determination of those fighting cancer every day I'm sharing this not just as a proud parent, but as a professional who believes in the power of purpose-driven initiatives. Last year I was asked how a campaign I'd worked on used an innovative approach to marketing. “Erm, it didn’t”. I was chatting about the amazing LEJoG Sisters campaign, but innovation was never part of the conversation when devising the campaign. We simply didn’t have the time or budget – 6 months & less that £500 – to risk trying something new and unproven. What we did do was follow good practices. This meant we could: 📖 Tell a clear and consistent story One that was powerful and concise but that we could slightly shift the focus of to work better for different audiences, formats & channels. 🧑🤝🧑 Understand our core audiences We couldn’t chase everyone or be everywhere. So, it was important to know who we needed to reach and where we could reach them. 🛜 Use others’ networks to share our story Building relationships with the right people meant they would tell our story for us. 📰 Create opportunities to share our story Tell ‘em, tell ‘em and tell ‘em again, as the old saying goes. It’s not that people don’t care, but they’re getting on with their own lives. If you want to be allowed into that, you’ve got to keep showing up. It’s easy to be seduced by the idea that innovation equals shiny, new & effective and that following good practices is staid, boring & what everyone else is doing. When they zig, zag and all that. But good practice isn’t the enemy of creativity. It simply provides the foundations for your creative campaign as well as a tried & test way to be effective. That’s why with no money and very little time, our LEJoG Sisters campaign reached 100,000s of people with its message about childhood cancer and helped to smash its fundraising target for Children with Cancer UK along the way. #charity #fundraising #comms #childhoodCancer
