What nobody tells when you get promoted
Congratulations! You have been promoted.
That is a time to celebrate.
You made it.
You achieved something you should be proud of.
But with a promotion there is also uncertainty.
Many things you do not know.
And most of it you learn only by doing them.
But the expectations to you are big.
And you might set too many expectations for yourself.
I have been there as well.
Being promoted into a position I knew theoretically.
Executing it is a different story though.
So let me help you with some perspectives that help you along the way.
* When you are promoted, you see things from a different perspective and your team sees you differently.
☞ You see now a bigger picture and your team in a different light.
☞ Your team sees you now in a different light, especially when you are the one who has been promoted over someone else.
☞ You know the ins and outs of your team and now you need to lead/manage them.
⇒ Give yourself time!
↳ You grow into the position.
↳ Speak to your team and listen.
↳ Set expectations right from the beginning.
↳ Be transparent about everything affecting your team. They rather hear it from you than from anybody else.
* Get rid of the position before, but bear in mind the struggles to make it easier.
☞ Do not approach the same situation with the eyes from before.
☞ Your eyes have changed now.
☞ You see a lot more what is happening behind the curtains.
☞ Do not get disconnected to the base.
⇒ Stay in regular touch with your team.
↳ Hear from them what is needed.
↳ Try to implement what is necessary and stay open about it.
↳ Try to make it easier for your team since you know the struggles.
* Get rid of the mindset you had in the past, but bear in mind to never forget that very mindset that brought you there.
☞ Different position, different thought process.
⇒ Your mindset brought you the promotion. Stay true to it. But now you need to expand your mind above the promotion.
* Get rid of the "it needs to be done mentality", but be aware of it when you think about how to make things better!
☞ You need to think more and do less.
☞ Your team does it for you.
☞ You think on simplification for instance, your team has it easier in doing.
⇒ You need to block time for you to think.
↳ Come up with ideas.
↳ Communicate them.
↳ Implement them.
As a bonus tip and of the most important:
Ask for help. There is no stupid question.
And there you have it.
Now you are a little bit better prepared for your promotion.
