For more than 20 years, I’ve been helping Ontario journalists find sources and cover municipal stories. In that time I’ve also been criss-crossing the province to deliver many hundreds of media and social media training sessions. In recent years, I’ve have had to start by asking, “What local media remains?” While the answers vary tremendously, we know that: ➡️ Ontario is no longer covered by media. Only parts of it are. ➡️ There are huge gaps between ‘news islands’. ➡️ The number of news islands continues to shrink. We are down to about twelve. ➡️ This has tremendous implications for our democracy, and in particular, the strength of democracy in the hundreds of municipalities that are not covered. Democracy depends on a well-informed public being able to discuss and debate policies using commonly known facts. ➡️ Municipal governments tend to miss having informed reporters who ask challenging questions. Governments don’t mind being challenged. They are used to being yelled at. Responding to wild conspiracies, rumours, and fantasy is MUCH harder, far more time consuming, and kind of soul destroying. At the OSUM Conference we will look at what the decline of media means, and what can be done to support the media that’s left (and rising from the ashes of traditional media). Personally, I will giving my thoughts on how municipal governments can adapt to this ongoing change, and what they can do to maintain a well-informed electorate.
Believe it or not, most municipal governments want local media. The decline of media creates real challenges. This panel will provide advice on how to support and nurture local journalism, and how to tell your story in this new environment. The Trump Presidency, Journalism, and Democracy - OA PDF: https://lnkd.in/gHQ9X2nR This book examines the disruptive nature of Trump news – both the news his administration makes and the coverage of it – related to dominant paradigms and ideologies of U.S. journalism. By relying on conceptualizations of media memory and "othering" through news coverage that enhances socio-conservative positions on issues such as immigration, the book positions this moment in a time of contestation. Contributors ranging from scholars, professionals, and media critics operate in unison to analyze today’s interconnected challenges to traditional practices within media spheres posed by Trump news. The outcomes should resonate with citizens who rely on journalism for civic engagement and who are active in social change. #Trump #Presidency #Journalism #Democracy #FourthEstate #FreedomofthePress #FirstAmendment #Othering #NewMedia #News #FakeNews #AlternativeFacts #LyingInPolitics #PoliticalSpeech

Fascinating presentation by Steven Waldman at the University of Nevada Reynolds School of Journalism Scripps Dinner re: the urgent need to rebuild local news. Since 2011, there are 60% fewer full time reporters in the US, and thousands of publishers have gone out of business, leaving ever widening news deserts in their wake. Today, half of the daily newspaper circulation in America are owned by hedge funds or private equity firms. The dramatic demise of local news outlets has wide-ranging effects on communities: Less civic engagement by residents, leading to more local corruption and increased polarization. Decreases in local investment, and even increased pollution. A combination of policy, philanthropy and innovation are helping to fill the local news void. There's a lot of work that needs to be done...and it's vital to the health and well-being of communities across our fruited plains. SUPPORT BY CLICKING : https://lnkd.in/dMH6fnx5 Please support us by raising your voice #ourvoiceyourpower In a world where independent journalism is facing unprecedented challenges, our campaign stands as a beacon for the preservation of local media. Why should you care? Because local journalism is the lifeblood of our communities, serving as the watchdogs of truth and accountability. As we witness the decline of local media outlets, we’re losing more than just news coverage – we’re losing our ability to speak with a united voice, to hold power to account, and to maintain the fabric of our democracy. Our campaign aims to shed light on the stark reality of this crisis, compelling you to confront the consequences of a media landscape devoid of local voices. Local media builds culture and underwrites our values, celebrating the invaluable contributions of local journalists and underscoring the importance of diverse representation in the media. It’s not just about reporting the news; it’s about fostering transparency, accountability, and informed civic participation. https://lnkd.in/dMH6fnx5
