🌄International Mountain Day 2024 reminds us of the crucial role mountains play in our planet’s ecosystems and the communities living in these harsh environments. 🌱 👩🌾 For over two decades, Silvateam has been committed to fostering economic and social development in remote and challenging valleys of the Peruvian Andes. Through investments in supply chain, we support the harvest of wild tara pods by creating stable jobs and incomes for local farmers in some of the most underdeveloped areas of Peru. 🌳Besides promoting wild tara harvesting, in 2002 we established our own plantations in Huánuco at 2,500 metres above sea level, using organic practices that help preserving local biodiversity. On this International Mountain Day, we proudly reaffirm our commitment to advancing sustainable development and supporting the resilience of mountain communities through innovation and care.🌍 #InternationalMountainDay #SustainableDevelopment #AndeanRegions #MountainSolutions #OrganicFarming

Saving #WestPapua means saving our planet. It's time to end Indonesia's colonial rule and occupation of WestPapua. West Papua 🇨🇺 must be free and independent so that indigenous Papuans can help protect the third largest lung of earth 🌎. West Papua, which comprises the western half of the island of New Guinea, is home to one of the largest remaining rainforests in the world. The region's lush tropical forests are often referred to as the "third lung of the earth," due to their significant contribution to the world's oxygen supply and carbon sequestration. West Papua's forests are not only vital for the environment, but they're also home to a rich cultural heritage and biodiversity. The region is inhabited by indigenous tribes, each with their own unique traditions and languages. Additionally, the forests are home to many endangered species, including tree kangaroos, birds of paradise, and saltwater crocodiles. It's essential to continue efforts to protect and preserve this precious ecosystem for future generations. Video: The destruction of tropical rainforests in West Papua by the Indonesian illegal loggers is widespread across West Papua. Tropical virgin rainforest is being cut down, and it's having a huge impact on the lives of indigenous Papuans. Anger and frustrations are brewing everywhere in West Papua as forests are being destroyed, and hunting grounds for the indigenous Papuans are no longer available. This is an urgent situation that can't be ignored by the international community.

“The lagoon is our market, it’s where we get our food. If it dries up, we won’t live well.” – Tirawá Waurá, Waurá teacher. For the Waurá Indigenous people of Brazil’s Xingu Basin, water is life. But this lifeline is under threat. Historic droughts and deforestation are drying up lagoons and streams, leaving families facing food insecurity and cultural loss. 🌱 Efforts like the Xingu Seed Network, involving 700 collectors, are restoring springs and degraded areas. Yet, with water levels declining each year, the challenge grows more critical. 💧 Read the full story by Flávia Milhorance on our website to understand how this community is navigating the impacts of a changing environment. #XinguBasin #IndigenousStories #EnvironmentalReporting #DialogueEarth #Waurá

🔵 Restoring Reefs, Revitalizing Livelihoods: A Day in the Waters of Kilwa Masoko Coral reefs are more than just underwater beauty; they are lifelines for marine biodiversity, coastal communities, and sustainable fisheries. As part of the MATUMBAWE HAI: Revitalizing Livelihoods in SOMAKI-CFMA Project, led by Aqua-Farms Organization - AFO we recently embarked on an exciting mission to identify ideal sites for coral restoration in Kilwa Masoko, Lindi, Tanzania. We visited three key sites—Kifinge, Masongoro, and Mto Bangwe, where we assessed critical factors like: ✅ Depth & Light Penetration – Essential for coral growth ✅ Existing Coral & Biodiversity – Indicators of a thriving ecosystem ✅ Artificial Reef Substrates – Potential foundations for restoration With snorkels on, we explored these vibrant waters, carefully documenting observations on slates for further analysis. And of course, fieldwork always brings unexpected moments—whether it was the thrill of spotting an octopus mid-survey 🐙 or the sheer exhaustion of my colleagues from hours of swimming, the experience was both challenging and rewarding. This project isn’t just about coral restoration it’s about empowering coastal communities, strengthening co-management efforts, and ensuring a sustainable blue economy. 🌊🌍 Looking forward to seeing how these assessments shape the next phase of our work! Let’s keep the ocean thriving. 🌱🪸 #MatumbaweHai #AquaFarmsOrg #CoralRestoration #SustainableFisheries #MarineConservation #BlueEconomy #OceanScience #CommunityEmpowerment

Today, we commemorate the Day of Brazil’s Indigenous Peoples - custodians of forest wisdom, vital to the ecological restoration cycle. At re.green, we are proud to actively collaborate with indigenous communities, engaging in knowledge exchange across all our initiatives. ⤵️ ▶️ Preserving the Earth: Bioflora and Cooplanjé In Bahia, we have forged strategic partnerships, including one with Cooplanjé, a collective of native seedling producers hailing from the Pataxó Boca da Mata Indigenous village. Through this collaboration, they supply us with high-quality Atlantic Forest seedlings, while we provide invaluable feedback to aid in the enhancement of their seed nursery operations. Our shared objective is to foster entrepreneurship and drive socioeconomic advancement within the local community. ▶️ Custodians of the Forest 🌳 Brazil is home to a vibrant indigenous population of over 1 million individuals, serving as the custodians of our planet's vital forest ecosystems. Their profound knowledge and stewardship are instrumental in driving our collective mission to restore forests and preserve biodiversity. #EcologicalRestoration #regreen #DeliveringNetZero #NatureBasedSolutions #Biodiversity #ESG #Sustainability #ScienceBasedSolutions #SustainableBusiness

In the late 1990s, some of the Achuar people from the Ecuadorian rainforest partnered with the founders of the Pachamama Alliance. This partnership was based on the belief that all people on this planet have a critical stake in the well-being of the Amazon rainforest. This collaboration led to two major achievements: The creation of the Kapawi Ecolodge, a sustainable tourism venture owned and operated by the Achuar, and the inclusion of Rights of Nature in the 2008 Ecuador Constitution. Learn more about this partnership to preserve the ancestral lands and culture of the Achuar.

Machu Picchu is a fragile ecosystem. During my trip, I spent time with two organizations leading the charge to protect it: SERNANP They’re the protectors of the natural area surrounding Machu Picchu. Safeguarding species like the Andean bear. Controlling erosion and deforestation. Managing tourism to minimize its environmental impact. Their work ensures the delicate balance here isn’t lost to time or human activity. Inkaterra Asociación (ITA) ITA combines research, restoration, and community empowerment to keep the region thriving. Over 1.5 million native trees planted to restore degraded areas. Monitoring unique wildlife, like rare orchids and spectacled bears. Reviving ancient Andean techniques to preserve the landscape. Machu Picchu’s terraces weren’t just for agriculture, they were a masterful drainage system to prevent landslides. ITA is applying that same wisdom today to protect the land. This iconic site depends on more than admiration. It relies on action. SERNANP and ITA are doing the work to make sure this treasure endures. Support like theirs is what keeps places like this alive, not just as a memory of the past but as a living, breathing legacy. With purpose and impact, Mario

The Majestic Mountain Gorilla 🦍 In the mist-covered mountains of central Africa, one of nature's most magnificent creatures roams the dense forests: the mountain gorilla. These gentle giants, known for their strength, intelligence, and complex social structures, are not only a testament to the wonders of the natural world but also a symbol of the importance of conservation efforts. Mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) are a subspecies of the eastern gorilla, distinguished by their thick fur, which helps them survive in the colder temperatures of their high-altitude habitats. These primates are predominantly found in the Virunga Mountains, which span the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Weighing up to 440 pounds and standing up to six feet tall when fully mature, mountain gorillas exhibit a remarkable blend of power and gentleness. Their social groups, led by a dominant silverback male, demonstrate complex family dynamics, cooperation, and communication, making them fascinating subjects for scientific study and observation. Mountain gorillas play a crucial role in their ecosystem. As herbivores, they feed on a variety of plants, leaves, and fruits, aiding in seed dispersal and contributing to the health and regeneration of their forest habitats. Their presence indicates a well-balanced and thriving ecosystem, underscoring their importance in maintaining biodiversity. #Conservation #WildlifeProtection #MountainGorillas #EcoTourism #Biodiversity #Sustainability

In this species spotlight, meet the Banggai cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni), 🐟 one of the rarest and most striking fish found in Indonesia’s Banggai Archipelago. 🌊 Why is the Banggai cardinalfish so important? The Banggai cardinalfish helps maintain balance in coral reef ecosystems by controlling populations of small invertebrates and serving as prey for larger marine predators. It also supports ecotourism by attracting divers and snorkelers to its native habitats in Indonesia, boosting local economies and promoting conservation efforts. 🚩 Why is it threatened? Characterised by a silver body with black stripes and white spots, this small fish has become iconic among aquarium enthusiasts. Unfortunately, its popularity has led to overexploitation, and its restricted range makes it particularly vulnerable to extinction. 🌏 Protecting the Banggai cardinalfish Conservation efforts – including more sustainable aquarium trade practices and habitat protection – are essential to ensure the survival of this endangered, iconic, and important species. Who cares about the red-billed gull? Sadly, not most of us. 😔 Alarmingly, Aotearoa’s threatened red-billed gull/tarāpunga is extremely misunderstood and in severe trouble. The tarāpunga has had unprecedented declines, and two huge colonies have already collapsed. 🐦 The next largest remaining mainland colony in Kaikōura is now failing fast. With unsustainable losses due to starvation from long-term environmental stress, this species is headed for extinction. 😢 Intentional human harm is a deep-rooted and long-standing additional issue for gulls. We need people to care and to have compassion for this special coastal seabird. 🌊🐣 Please share this story from New Zealand Geographic to raise awareness of this native seagull, that we have often taken for granted, so that we can ultimately take action to save the biodiversity and the ecosystems they rely on. 🌱 If the ecosystem at sea is broken, none of this will save the red-bills. They are declining, they are not doing well, and they need our help. 🆘🐦💔 #SaveOurSeabirds #ConservationNZ #Biodiversity #ProtectNZWildlife https://lnkd.in/gg7JcJq5
