2024 Pruning has begun. ✂️ ✂️ ✂️ Pruning is incredibly important in the vineyard. It's not only about removing foliage and branches, but it helps affect how grapes grow and their quality come harvest time. Winter Pruning (as seen here) is especially important. We started our pruning process in the Nebbiolo block this morning. The Nebbiolo is cane pruned which means that everything is pruned back (cut back) to the head (main crown or trunk) of the vine. All except the fruiting canes (responsible for producing the grapes) and a couple of renewal spurs for future canes.  Like many tasks in the vineyard, pruning technically happens only once a year.  Generally, there are two types of pruning in the vineyard. There's cane pruning and cordon/spur pruning. Here at Presqu'ile, we are predominantly cane pruning.  What questions do you have about pruning? High winds 💨 continue today in the vineyards! Here’s some Cabernet Sauvignon we have yet to finish mechanically pruning. Mechanized pruning really is the only feasible way to implement delay pruning for frost protection on large acreage like this. Machine 🚜 pruning: - 2.5 weeks to complete this whole ranch, 5 people Hand pruning??? ✂️ - 6 weeks and 40+ people By delaying the time of the year we prune, we allow the buds on the tips of last years canes to suppress the growth of the lower buds (which we intend to keep for fruit and cane production this year) using a principle called apical dominance. The suppressed dormant buds are MUCH more tolerant of cold/adverse weather than actively growing ones. When we finally do prune them back, it delays those lower buds become active even more (several days). This lets us dodge late spring freeze events (like we had 1.5 weeks ago!) fairly easily in most varieties without expensive frost fans or other equipment. Cabernet isn’t a problem, but with varieties like sauv blanc, Muscat, Chardonnay, etc it is absolutely critical here!!! #texasvineyards #texaswine #grapereturns Texas Vine Country FermForge

Dreaming of your own vineyard in Italy? 🏡🇮🇹 The European Union has established regulations to control and manage vineyard planting, ensuring quality standards and preventing overproduction of wine. 👉 To establish or expand a vineyard, you'll need a license or quota to plant a certain number of vines on a specified area of land. 📝 You'll need to register your purchased quota at the "Ufficio del Registro" with a "scrittura privata" (private act of sale), preparing two copies. 📍 Submit one copy to the Regione dell’ Umbria in Perugia, Office Produzioni Vegetali, or your local Comunità Montana. Include a copy of your property act and a detailed map. 🌱 The planting authorization is valid for 2 years. If uprooting an existing vineyard, you have a 5-year window for replanting. If selling the quota, the new buyer must replant within 2 years. 📢 Communicate vine planting details to Regione or Comunità Montana, specifying cadastre page, land piece, surface, and vine variety (e.g., Trebbiano, SanGiovese). 🍇 In a DOC area, register your vineyard as a DOC vineyard for higher prices. In the third year, join the "Albo DOC" of your Commune with four copies. This is what can happen in a vineyard when a grower decides to change varieties. The choice for grafting over can be due to poor performance (a red flag) or market value of the variety planted. Anyway, the safest way to graft over a vineyard block is to test the incoming budwood as well as what is in the vineyard. In this case, either the budwood or vineyard vines were infected with a pathogenic strain of Agrobacterium vitis. Gall symptoms generally do no display unless stress is present (grafting is considered stressful to a vine!). The work of grafting over a vineyard block is time consuming and expensive. Why not spend the extra money to do it right?

How do I prune grape vines? How does pruning grapevines apply to business? (and life in general) 🌿🍇 Grape Vine Pruning Guide 🍇🌿 Sometimes in order to keep your business, healthy and put out the best product, you have to “prune” so to speak. There may be certain services or products that you currently offer that distract from your core business. Those non-core services or products tend to sap energy from the main business and can lead to disorganized growth, growing too rapidly in the wrong direction, putting out a poor product or service. Putting the majority of your energy, i.e. 80% for instance, into the 20% of what you do that you really do best, will lead to better grapes in the instance of winemaking, and a better product or better services in the case of a business. Cheers to your business🍷🍷 Pruning your grape vines is crucial for healthy growth and abundant fruit production. Here’s a quick step-by-step to get you started: 1. Timing: Prune in late winter or early spring, when the vine is dormant but before buds swell. 2. Tools: Use clean, sharp secateurs or loppers. 3. Structure: Identify the main structural parts of your vine - the trunk, permanent arms (cordons), and the canes. 4. Choose: Select 2-4 healthy canes from the last growing season on each cordon to keep. These should be about pencil-thickness and well-positioned to support new growth. 5. Prune: Cut back all other canes to the trunk, leaving the selected canes with 8-12 buds each for fruiting (my vines are so close together and grow with a tremendous amount of foliage each year, so I cut way back on this number) 6. Thin: Remove any weak, damaged, or diseased wood, and clear away all clippings to prevent disease. 7. This is an all to familiar story for British orchards. Yet another massive orchard removed from the landscape. As Benedict Macdonald and I wrote about in our book 'Orchard, A Year in England's Eden', traditionally managed orchards can be one of the very best types of farmland for nature that we have. But they can only function in a landscape that has a market for their product (consumers). And can only function in a regulatory landscape that doesn't allow cheaper imports from overseas undercutting them (trade deals). And are only of high nature value in a farming environment that doesn't rely on huge inputs (particularly damaging are the insecticides and fungicides used in some orchards). It is a huge shame that the British orchard market, once the world pioneer in apple and perry pear fruit production, has been destroyed the way it has. The nature value of this wood pasture habitat, particularly when produced to organic type standards, cannot be overstated.
