When was the last time you went to an event out of town where you stayed in the block of rooms and there was a welcome bag at the front desk for you? Do you remember how you #felt? For me, I love #welcomebags. What will be inside? What will it say about the people hosting? What new information will I now get to understand about this wonderful event? Plus, the #snacks. What if the next time you had a finalist #candidate come into the organization (from out of town or around the corner), you put together a welcome bag. What would you put in there to #represent the organization? How would that make the candidate feel as they walk into the room? Everyone is saddened to see more upcoming job losses. This time with VM Ware in Ballincollig, Cork, Ireland. If you're affected by redundancy or job loss, avoid pigeon holing yourself. Look at your knowledge and skills with a focus on which are transferable. Search across different jobs boards at various roles instead of just what you've been doing. Open your mind, read job descriptions. Research, learn and understand that there are options. Example: Does your sector have regulation? If so, people from your sector are usually qualified to move across as your knowledge is valuable. Selling a product or service? Those selling skills are transferable. Marketing is likewise. Ask people who will answer honestly, what you're good at and weak at. List these things and think about where they are also used. Get your CV sorted (not just updated). And as you're reading this, do job searches on here and save them so you get notifications. Register with recruiters who handle roles you'd be interested in. Make your job, finding a new one. Get up, get ready and get stuck in every day. Relentlessly to a daily time schedule. Yes Daily! Never underestimate the power of networking. When Susan LaMotte put Debbie C. and I in touch in July, it was a simple suggestion to have a networking conversation: Debbie and I were both clients of exaqueo, but also had a lot in common when it came to our scope of responsibilities and where we sat in our respective organizations. We hit it off and bonded over our passion for focusing on #employerbrand throughout the entire employment journey and navigating the dynamics of sitting in marketing while influencing HR processes. Fast forward to November, and I found myself unemployed after layoffs at MarketAxess. I shared here that not only had I lost my job, but it happened while my daughter had been hospitalized with RSV (she’s fine!). As difficult as it was to create that post with all that was happening, it was the best decision I could’ve made when it came to putting myself out there. Case in point: Debbie reached out shortly after to let me know that she was going to be expanding her team at CBRE in the new year and asked if I would be interested in exploring further. The rest was history, and Tuesday marked my first day as CBRE’s Director, Global Employer Brand. 🎉 A little known fact about me: I’ve always been interested in #realestate. And funny enough, I interviewed for a marketing role at CBRE nearly 14 years ago when I graduated from college, but opted to take a different job instead. Talk about things coming full circle! As I went through the interview process with CBRE this time and met the amazing people that I now am so happy to call colleagues, I was reminded of how applicable my experiences throughout my career would be here. Deep down, I felt this HAD to work out because it just seemed meant to be. I’m beyond excited to be in a role and at a company doing the exact kind of work I want to be doing (not to mention an incredible new employer brand that I can’t wait to help activate), AND that checks pretty much every box of what I hoped for in my next career move…especially in this current environment. Some brief insights about my #jobsearch: things are tough right now. And my process, which fortunately was not very long, was a humbling experience. No exaggeration, I was rejected from EVERY. SINGLE. JOB. I applied to online. The only roles that I made it to the interview stage for were ones where I was approached by someone in my network. I have strong brand names and great experience on my resume, and in the past, that’s been enough to at least get me a phone screen. But not this time. It’s truly the wild west out there, so my advice is to not shy away from making it known you are unemployed, keep making connections, and leverage your network. If I can help be that foot in the door for you, I absolutely will pay it forward. I want to thank the countless individuals who supported me these past few months, whether it was sharing opportunities, offering advice or simply letting me vent. Now let’s do this! #RTRShowOff
