“A climate safe future is a necessary condition for peace, but we won’t achieve a climate safe future without peace” I came across this thought provoking TED talk by Olivia Lazard covering the often forgotten about close coupling between decarbonisation and geopolitics. It reminded me that as we push for and progress to a clean energy future, it is important to pay attention to the unintended consequences. There are a lot of lessons we can learn from the unintended consequences of fossil fuel adoption both environmentally and geopolitically. 🌳⛏️🕊️🏦💡 https://lnkd.in/efGVTKeh

I’m pleased to share that I’ll be speaking at New Statesman’s Energy and Climate Change conference on 14th May on a panel about how we can reduce the risks associated with climate change. We all know the effects are already being felt across the world, but as a society we haven’t yet grasped the critical role that nature can play in both slowing climate change and helping us adapt to it. From wetlands protecting communities from flooding to restored peatlands locking carbon in the ground, this is central to the work we do here at the RSPB. There have been recent news articles pitching concerns about nature as some kind of battle against policies supporting our drive to reach net zero, to develop renewable energy projects and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. The truth is that climate change is one of the greatest threats to our natural world and we must accelerate our actions to reduce our reliance on oil and gas. And development and nature absolutely need not always be in conflict. Rather than either/or, we need both. A strategic approach that ensures nature is considered from the outset can avoid the worst impacts and maximise the gains. But a failure to take what we call a ‘nature positive’ approach is full of risk, builds delay into the process and almost guarantees outcomes which are less satisfactory for people and the economy and damaging for the planet. Nature recovery needs to be targeted alongside climate and net zero in policies from all parties as we move towards a general election. Nature must have a voice and we will continue to push to ensure it is heard. The New Statesman event is free to attend for the public and the third sector, so please do come along and join the discussion: https://lnkd.in/ebdeGcgE #ClimateChange #Energy #Nature

Very interesting article; however, although I would like to share its optimism, when I read that the demand for fossil fuels will peak in 2030, I can't help but think that it's already too late. When the ravages of climate are evident, we still break emission records every year. We need more renewables and to electrify transportation and industry, without any doubt, but the responsibility - beyond politicians, major summits, and the productive fabric - is of the whole society. The other day I watched Marie Antoinette movie. While the Revolution that would end her world - and her life - was brewing, the aristocrats blindly maintained their opulence and their unrestrained way of life. As a society, aren't we experiencing something similar? #renewables #alternativeenergies #energy #climatechange #energytransition #future

📆 Next Week | 13 June | Save the date! Today marks World Environment Day. This year's focus is land restoration, halting desertification and building drought resilience, increasingly prescient issues as climate change intensifies. The transition to a carbon neutral economy will play a vital part in both halting and mitigating the effects of the climate crisis, and the energy landscape will prove particularly important. To discuss the future of the European energy landscape, join us next week for an insightful and engaging discussion as part of the SSH Centre project. ⤵️ Register below. #PolicyInsight #CleanEnergy #GreenTransition #WorldEnvironmentDay
