What’s next for the #EUDR after today's vote in the European Parliament? The #EuropeanParliament approved the #EuropeanCommission’s proposal to delay the EUDR by 12 months, but crucially also adopted other amendments to the legislation. That means the Commission, #EuropeanCouncil and Parliament now need to negotiate the amended legislative file via trilogues. From a legislative perspective, the amendments have not been finalised and the original text (and 2024 deadline) still stands for now. We're still waiting for the dust to settle after the Parliament’s vote today, but based on what we've seen so far, the small set of amendments and the agreement to a one-year delay (rather than longer) means that the amendments now on the table are likely palatable to all three institutions. That said, there is still the possibility that one or other of the institutions will want to open up some of the points for deeper or further discussion when trilogues begin. So: ✅ Companies can have a fair degree of confidence now to move forward on the basis that there will be a one-year delay. It seems likely that the one year delay will eventually be adopted. ✅ The greater risk is that the delay is not implemented in time to allow for publication in the EU Official Journal before December 30, 2024. Amongst the other amendments approved by the Parliament is a new risk category for countries posing "no risk" on deforestation. Companies may want to start to factor this into their planning, but should wait until a final legislative decision before relying on the new category. After today's vote in EU Parliament in the first reading the #EUDR applicability postponement to end of 2025 remains questionable. Although EU Parliament voted in favour of the postponement and in favour of certain additional amendments (e.g. "no-risk" countries) proposed by political groups, this caused that the whole bundle of amendments will be discussed in interinstitutional negotiations called "trilogue" and will eventually have to be endorsed by EU Parliament and Council. It is hard to guess the final outcomes and whether the final conclusion can be reached by the end of this year.

🧭 EUDR DELAY: final vote by EU Parliament scheduled for November! EU Parliament today approved the use of the urgent legislative procedure to address the proposal to delay the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). The final vote is now scheduled for the Parliament's 'November Part 1 session', taking place from 13 to 14 November, with a deadline for amendments set for 6 November. While today's decision moves the process forward, the delay remains uncertain until the final vote, which is scheduled just weeks before the regulation's current entry into force on 30 December 2024. Any disruptions or complications in the final vote could have serious repercussions for businesses covered by the regulation. These companies, which include those dealing with products like cattle, wood, soy, palm oil, and coffee, are already working to ensure their supply chains are deforestation-free in compliance with the EUDR. A failure to finalize the delay in time would leave businesses with little clarity or time to adjust their operations before the original 30 December 2024 deadline. For many, a lack of clear direction could in particular result in legal risks, financial penalties, or disruption of trade activities, particularly in industries heavily reliant on the commodities regulated by the EUDR. Furthermore, such uncertainty may deter investment, hinder long-term planning, and complicate supply chain management, potentially creating broader economic instability in affected sectors. Therefore, a smooth and timely decision on the delay is now absolutely crucial to ensure businesses can effectively prepare and comply with the regulation. #EYLAW #EUDR #DEFORESTATION Michelle T. 🌍🌲 #EUDR Update: Important Developments on the European Deforestation Regulation Recently, the EU Parliament debated key changes to the European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Here's what happened: ✅ "No risk" country classification cancelled: An amendment to include a "no risk" country classification was cancelled this week due to concerns over potential loopholes, even though it was approved in the EU Parliament earlier. The countries benchmarking system will remain a three-tier structure: low, standard, and high risk. ✅ Implementation timeline extended: The initial request to delay the EUDR's implementation by two years was withdrawn just before the vote three weeks ago, when the "no risk” country benchmarking was approved. Instead, the application has been postponed by one year: - Large businesses must comply by December 30, 2025. - Micro- and small enterprises have until June 30, 2026. Now, the European Parliament and Council need to formally adopt this amendment for it to take effect. We at #TIMBERplus will continue to monitor these changes to keep you informed and prepared. 👉 If you are still figuring out how to make your processes fully compliant, the #TIMBERplusEUDR system is here to support you—reach out for more info: https://zurl.co/FAYL #EUDR #DeforestationRegulation #Veneer #SoftwareSolutions #Sustainability #Compliance

🚨 EUDR Update Yesterday, the European Parliament voted on 9 amendments to the EU Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR), approving 8 of them (subject to the approval of the Trilogue). These include: - A 12-month delay in enforcement, shifting implementation to December 30, 2025, for large companies and June 30, 2026, for SMEs. - The introduction of a "No-Risk" country category for nations with robust anti-deforestation measures. While this delay provides additional time to prepare, it’s critical to note that this isn’t a signal to slow down your efforts. Non-compliance will carry steep financial penalties—up to 4% of annual turnover. ✅ Now is the time to act! The extension gives you a window to strengthen due diligence processes, ensuring full compliance with EUDR requirements. 🇺🇸 Why US Could Opt Out of EUDR Over 'Impossible' Standards ⏰ Weekend Flashback: In the wake of the Australian government flagging concerns with the #eudr, WoodCentral reports that a coalition of US senators are also pushing for the world’s largest forest producer to walk away from the rules, citing compliance challenges that could reshape international trade and even influence the upcoming presidential elections. 🔍 Why It Matters: 1️⃣ Compliance Challenges: US industry leaders argue that the EUDR's stringent traceability requirements, which demand sourcing details to the individual plot of land, are nearly impossible for the US pulp and paper industry to meet. 2️⃣ Economic Impact: Senators warn that the EUDR could restrict US access to the EU market, potentially affecting over $3.5 billion in forest-derived products annually, significantly impacting the US economy. 3️⃣ Political Repercussions: The legislation has become a contentious issue, potentially influencing the 2024 US Presidential Elections, as it highlights broader debates on trade, environmental standards, and international cooperation. 🌐 The pushback from US senators, including detailed discussions with US Trade Representative Katherine Tai, underscores the significant tensions between US economic interests and environmental goals. 🔗 Explore the full implications of the EUDR and why it's causing such a stir on both sides of the Atlantic: https://lnkd.in/gT5ikKXK 💬 #questionforgroup: How should the US balance its trade and environmental policies in the face of international regulations like the EUDR?
