My friend’s daughter performed in a musical over the weekend. It was her first such performance, and the pressure ratcheted up because she was cast as the lead. It was a big deal for his family, with much to celebrate. He told me about the bouquet of flowers his family was excited to give her after the performance. He went with a mixed bouquet of spring blooms, overflowing with color and intermixed with different shapes and scents. Roses, while nice, he said, are typical for the occasion, and this was anything but. I can see how “typical” the way some businesses choose to market their products and services. They check the box for a list of tactics and call the job done. What would happen if you decided to move from typical to unique? What if, instead of checking a box, you doubled down on an aspect of your marketing strategy to stand apart? What do people say about you when you aren't around? What would people believe or not believe about you if they heard a tale about you? You have a brand whether you are aware of it or not. When's the last time you tried to understand what your brand is? Don't let your brand just happen to you, but rather be intentional about crafting it. We are seeing daily in the media how people are met with grace or criticism solely based on their brand. Today we saw people rally around Kelly Rowland because her reputation has never been that she's a diva or difficult to work with. Why does that matter? Because people assume that if she left the show, she had a reason. I don't know the details and neither do you, and in those situations people will draw their conclusions based on brand. Her brand is that she wouldn't just do that kind of thing without a reason. So what's your brand?
