$25 Million over 5 years set to fund the world's first large scale coral reef restoration project! 🎉 The Hawaiian based project ʻĀkoʻakoʻa, put together by various stakeholders including NOAA and the Dorrance Family, aims to restore a 193-kilometer stretch of reef along Hawai‘i Island’s west coast. A 2015 survey of 14,000 coral colonies in West Hawai‘i revealed that 38-92% of the reefs had partially or fully bleached, with many dying. Determined to address the crisis, Ecologist Greg Asner shifted his focus from tropical forests to coral reefs. Some of Asner's previous work includes the first high-resolution global map of shallow tropical coral reefs. Now, his new project ʻĀkoʻakoʻa aspires to pioneer large-scale coral restoration. That if successful, could offer valuable insights for global reef restoration efforts in the face of ongoing ocean thermal stress. Recent satellite imagery has unveiled an additional 64,000 square kilometers of coral cover – an area the size of Ireland. The long-awaited nature restoration law aims to restore at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030, and to repair all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050. When imagining corals, the picture that comes to mind is usually a stationary one: a garden of rock-like structures covering sections of the ocean floor. Reef conservation efforts typically focus on preserving established coral and protecting them from known stressors such as pollution, overfishing and runoff from coastline populations. However, new research near Miloliʻi in the southwestern part of the island of Hawaii, shows that identifying and protecting marine ecosystems both down-current and up-current of coral reefs, specifically areas where coral larvae are more likely to survive and thrive, is crucial to future coral #conservation and restoration efforts — especially as reefs face increasing pressure from the devastating effects of #climatechange . The research, completed by Arizona State University scientists and their collaborators, appears in the current issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. https://lnkd.in/gEAVzGtP

OPEN CALL: expressions of interest for seascape restoration grants from the Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme 🌊 Europe's much-loved coastlines, islands and seas hold great potential to be revitalized for nature and people, but only 11% of funding for ecosystem restoration in Europe supports marine environments, or 'seascapes'.   The Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme is addressing this funding gap, and with our support, will award grants for work to restore degraded European seascapes, making them more biodiverse and more resilient.   The programme will award grants of $1.5m to $5m for five-year marine restoration projects, and grants of $750K to $1.5m for organizations aiming to develop their expertise in seascape recovery.   Now open for expressions of interest! On this World Oceans Day, we echo the call of World Oceans Day 2024 to “awaken new depths” of compassion towards the ocean that sustains us and all life on Earth. Coral communities are vital to maintaining marine ecosystem due to their ability to support the highest diversity of marine life. Our marine conservation project, #CORALREEFStoration, underscores our commitment to sustaining the oceans and rehabilitating our damaged coral habitats.  In collaboration with the Hong Kong Innovation Foundation, we have partnered with Ocean Park Corporation, Archireef, and The Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel Hong Kong to undertake a coral restoration project. This initiative employs 3D-printed terracotta reef tiles to outplant rescued corals into the local seabed. To date, we have successfully deployed 14 square metres of reef tiles seeded with over 280 rescued coral fragments. This effort has enhanced the habitat complexity of the site, attracting more fish and other marine organisms, with 17 unique species such as long-spine urchins and edible sea cucumbers found.
