Partnering with the best Housebuilding businesses, I stop the wrong people from joining. Over 6750 meetings in 22 years of headhunting. I won't pretend to be your best friend. I'm paid to search. I don't want CVs.

As you rise through the ranks in the Commercial department, you’ll begin to realise that it’s one thing being able to do the job but another to hone your skills to become a leader. Yes, you can work with numbers, produce valuations, compile a CVR for each site and cost to complete analysis, but you need management skills. These skills will be essential for all interactions, particularly site personnel and coworkers, supporting departments and suchlike. People forget that the QS career journey can be a lonely one, largely responsible for your own actions. Where does this magical management skill come from? How do you think as a leader? What if your boss isn’t a great leader or manager of people. Will you learn bad habits? As you climb the slippery pole to the bigger seats, take a look at how many interactions you’ve had and the tone of them. When you get to the bigger chairs, consider how you will impact everyone else in the department. This isn’t just about Commercial, it applies to all departments but when the role is quite siloed, it’s more important to recognise your own behaviour. Some leaders only have to look at someone to convey their feelings. Think what a difference it would make if they knew how to get the best from their team.

I always said when I got into Management, that to my team, I'd be the sort of Manager I never had! I would periodically look at their CVs to see if they had detailed skills on it, that weren't being utilised which could be beneficial to their working day. Many years ago, within my team, I had a particular sales negotiator, who was great at selling, but in her spare time, she enjoyed photography, so I got her out and about taking photos of the properties we listed, she loved it. Being away from her desk for a bit, and doing something she enjoyed. Plus she could better sell a property she'd actually seen! To be a team leader you need to be a team player. I've encountered too many (so called) 'managers' who are out purely for themselves and have no idea how to build morale in a team and certainly are clueless when it comes to managing a team of different age ranges.
