In the light of recent findings by independent U.S. laboratory Valisure which detected high levels of benzene—a known cancer-causing chemical—in acne treatments from prominent brands, we must pause to reflect on the broader implications for clinical studies and consumer safety. David Light, Co-Founder and President of Valisure, points out that unlike the benzene found in sunscreens, which were impurities from contamination, the benzene detected in benzoyl peroxide products stems directly from the benzoyl peroxide itself. As professionals, we must question the integrity of clinical studies and recognize that profit motives can skew results. It is imperative to support rigorous independent testing and advocate for transparency in the pharmaceutical industry. The safety of the consumer should always take precedence over the bottom line. The call to action by Valisure to the FDA for a recall of the affected products and a revision of industry guidance is a reminder of the vigilance required to ensure that the products we trust are not only effective but unequivocally safe. #ConsumerSafety #PharmaceuticalEthics #ClinicalStudies

Benzene, a known carcinogen that has been the subject of lawsuits against Unilever, J&J, Olaplex and L'Oréal, was recently identified in commercial acne treatment products, according to research from Valisure. However, in a press statement responding to these findings, the Personal Care Products Council (PCPC) called to question Valisure's test methods, referring to them as unrealistic. Per Valisure, initial GC-MS analysis of 99 benzoyl peroxide (BPO)-containing products detected benzene in 94 of the 99 products without any elevated temperature incubation. (Editor's note: actual benzene levels detected were not reported). Benzene is prohibited by the European Commission, per safecosmetics, and is restricted to a concentration of 2 parts per million (ppm) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), per Valisure. China’s National Medical Products Administration also limits benzene to 2 mg/kg for cosmetics, per ChemLinked. Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/gAKSXN8G #FDA #PCPC #Benzene #Cosmeticsafety

Benzyl peroxide is composed of three different chemical compounds used as a preservative and present in cosmetics for the treatment of acne and other facial conditions was tested in well branded products. The tests were conducted to determine the levels of benzene present. The results were surprising, not good if not scary. We know that benzene is a well known and established carcinogen. People do not equate ‘benzoyl’ with ‘benzene’ so not much attention or concerned for the product. If you have children, teenagers, young adults, people who basically have ongoing skin conditions. This article is important for you to look over. If you spend the time you will be floored because many of the well branded well-known products that we have come to trust or actually contained in the study. Here again, is just another example of how the recommended guidelines in terms of parts per million are ignored by these corporates. we have to ask ourselves why?

Development and Characterization of Adapalene Loaded Microemulsion-Based Hydrogel for Acne Treatment. https://lnkd.in/ehFN6E6Q Presently, acne is affecting globally many people (9.4%) and one of the leading causes of stress especially in youths. Adapalene (AD) has been applied successfully for acne treatment. However, adapalene drug is from BCS class II and exhibits less solubility in water (<1mg/mL) & causes skin irritation which leads to patient incompliance. The objective of the current study was design of microemulsion-based gel for topical delivery of adapalene. Solubility studies demonstrated that adapalene exhibit good solubility in Tween 80, propylene glycol, and oleic acid. The microemulsion showed globule size 248.4±2 nm, PDI (0.251), and Zeta potential (-15.8 mV) confirming colloidal stability. The dilutability and freeze-thaw study of microemulsion showed no sign of phase separation. The microemulsion-based gel showed clarity, pH (5±0.5), viscosity (64cps), and good spreadability (6.5±0.6 cm) for topical application. In-vitro gel formation study showed that inclusion of polymer (Carbopol 940) maintained viscosity of microemulsion-based hydrogel for longer period of time. Dissolution study demonstrated that AD showed sustained release for 24h from gel as compared to microemulsion and drug suspension. Thus, it could be a prospective formulation for acne treatment via topical route which can improve patient compliance by reducing skin irritation.
