I frequently wonder why more SMEs are not availing of EU funding for innovation and research projects. An interesting report which highlights (from an Irish perspective): 1. A total of 179 SME participants in Horizon Europe Projects, average funding €638,000 per project. [note we have 279,000 SMEs in IE so lets not get ahead of ourselves]. 2. The success rate for IE applications is 19.9%. What can we learn from our Belgian friends (24%)? 3. Tech-Intense projects in the main, concentrated in digital, deep-tech, green. 4. SMEs rarely leading projects. 5. 87% of SMEs are partners in research consortia. 6. 40% Co-Funding from SMEs expected. Whilst welcome to note that there is increased funding in Horizon Europe, across various pillars, a few fundamental questions must be asked. 1. How can we understand what 'good looks like' so that there can be an increased success rate for applicants? 2. How can the barriers to (successful) entry be adjusted to increase participation, lower complexity and costs for SMEs - particularly beyond the tech sector? 3. How can SMEs lead such endeavours?

Canada’s entry into Horizon Europe is a significant milestone #HorizonEurope is the biggest EU research and innovation programme ever, with an EU budget of €95.5bn for the period 2021-2027, complemented by the financial contributions from associated countries. It is open to the world, which means that participants from all over the world can participate in nearly all calls. Entities from associated countries have additional opportunities in collaborative projects and are treated on par with the entities of EU Member States regarding access to funds. The signing of the Association Agreement with Canada is expected to take place in 2024, pending the completion of all necessary validations on both sides. Once signed, researchers and organisations in Canada will be able to receive funding under Pillar II of Horizon Europe. International development partners play a crucial role in fostering global growth and stability. Their efforts in providing financial aid, technical assistance and capacity building support are simply vital for sustainable development. Last week I had the incredible honor of meeting UN agencies in Geneva focusing on solutions to address the most pressing global issues. We shared many insights and ideas, but one clearly stands out for me and it's this: We need to create a pathway that is forward-looking and includes the private sector in order to drive systemic change at scale. The speed and complexity of global issues are outpacing our current systems for cooperation. Cooperation and breaking silos are absolutely mandatory, especially as trust in institutions wanes and funding for international development partners is under threat. We must also recognize the incredible value of the private and public sectors connecting in person at events like this, to reflect and have out-of-the-box discussions that help us move toward a better future.
