"Working Hard" is often touted as one of the strongest values someone can have, especially in the workplace. And while I agree that putting effort into our work can be a sign of integrity and respect for others, I also believe "Working Hard" takes up more than its fair share of space in how we think about others. The "Hard Worker" to "Good Person" pipeline over-associates these two concepts to be the same, always. And why? A society designed for corporate profit relies on us to judge each other based on over-valuing "Hard Work." This is the catalyst for people to deny their fellow humans basic rights on the premise of a lack of "Hard Work." I want to see more value in "Soft Work." Being gentle to ourselves and others. Cooperating over competing. Truly honoring the basic dignity in all people that is not contingent on how much they are able to contribute to a profit. "What is your relationship with the value of "Hard Work?" How does it make you feel about yourself, when no one else is around? Is there space for you to be a "Good Person" if you are not "Working Hard?" How can we operationalize the value of "Soft Work" in our workplaces?
