🌍🔋 Celebrating Sustainability: Countries Leading with 100% Renewable Energy In an incredible environmental milestone, several countries have achieved the goal of generating 100% of their electricity from renewable sources. This monumental achievement not only sets a global standard but also showcases the practicality and scalability of sustainable energy practices. Countries at 100% Renewable Energy: 🇦🇱 Albania: Harnesses almost all of its energy from hydroelectric power. 🇧🇹 Bhutan: Utilizes its rich hydro resources to meet its energy needs completely. 🇳🇵 Nepal: Almost entirely relies on hydroelectric power, complemented by a minuscule but growing contribution from solar. 🇵🇾 Paraguay: A major hydroelectric powerhouse, thanks to the Itaipu Dam. 🇮🇸 Iceland: Uses geothermal and hydroelectric power to supply virtually all of its electricity. 🇪🇹 Ethiopia: Major investments in hydro and wind are paying off with nearly complete renewable energy coverage. 🇨🇩 DR Congo: Primarily uses hydroelectric power, with plans to expand further. 🇨🇷 Costa Rica: A world leader in sustainability, using a mix of hydro, wind, and geothermal sources. 🇳🇴 Norway: Extensive hydroelectric plants and wind farms cover most energy needs. Namibia and Tajikistan: Both countries make significant use of hydroelectric power, moving towards greater sustainability. The Full Picture with Embodied Carbon in Renewable Energy It's vital to consider not just the operational benefits but also the "embodied carbon" of renewable technologies, which includes emissions from all stages of a product's lifecycle, such as material extraction and manufacturing. Solar panels, for instance, produce 300 to 400 kg CO2e per kW during production, highlighting the significant upfront carbon costs despite their long-term benefits in reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Advancements in technology and more efficient processes are essential to minimize these emissions. The Circular Ecology article further explores the embodied carbon in solar PV systems, suggesting that alternative technologies like CdTe PV could significantly reduce these emissions, which is crucial for achieving net-zero carbon solutions. This means that after 9 months, the solar panel has offset the emissions it produced during manufacturing by generating clean energy. Exciting news: Eurofins Scientific powers up for a more sustainable future 🌞 We're happy to announce our participation in a groundbreaking deal with Thermo Fisher Scientific for a 36-megawatt stake in the Serbal Solar Project, a colossal 127-megawatt initiative in Spain developed by ib vogt GmbH. This strategic investment is a pivotal step towards our ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2025. 🌍 The whole solar project will provide clean energy equivalent to the average consumption of 83,000 households and reduce up to 71,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions yearly. EDF Renewables Launches EVAPORE Demonstrator in France to Tackle Apple Growers’ Challenges with Innovative Agrivoltaics Technology EDF Renewables, SudExpé, and Cybeletech have signed a consortium agreement for the EVAPORE apple tree agrivoltaics demonstrator at the SudExpé site in Marsillargues, Hérault (34). Construction is set to begin this summer, with commissioning planned for the start of the 2024. Photovoltaic panels will be installed on apple trees to study the coexistence of fruit and electricity production from 2025 to 2027. The EVAPORE demonstrator, winner of the ADEME Sustainable Energy Research call for projects in September 2023, is an innovative collective initiative. TotalEnergies ENEOS Concludes Solar Installation Project in Collaboration with TotalEnergies Corbion, Enhancing Sustainability of Luminy® PLA Production TotalEnergies ENEOS has accomplished the implementation of a Solar Rooftop, Carport, and Cover Way Project in collaboration with TotalEnergies Corbion, a leader in Polylactic Acid (PLA) bioplastics production and a 50/50 joint venture between TotalEnergies and Corbion since 2016. Under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), this project, situated within the Asia Industrial Estate, has a capacity of 1,250 kWp. Expected solar panel output is approximately 1.6 gigawatt-hours (GWh) annually, delivering substantial cost savings for TotalEnergies Corbion and reducing the company’s carbon footprint by 823 tons of CO2 per year, equivalent to planting of approximately 12,300 trees.
