“Slow down, you move too fast”— a summer anthem. ⚫️Why do we grow programming before infrastructure? Or funding? ⚫️How come our big ideas are easier to come by than the culture required to ground it? ⚫️Why do we expand more naturally than we contract? (Boards too!) Spend some time journaling. Listen to music. Get your reflective groove on. Reflection. Intention. Strategy. Action. It’s a cycle. It’s a marathon. It’s not a sprint. Endurance matters. Slow down, you’re moving to fast. No need to bypass the moment. Make it last. https://lnkd.in/g4rR6xbh

Check out this gorgeous article from the The New York Times
“Under Bain, the executive director, the Center is also hosting new programming, including dance and yoga classes, trumpet lessons and events that engage the mostly Spanish-speaking community, whether through music or social activism.” “‘Louis and Lucille were two Black artists who owned their own home in the ’40s,”’ Bain said. “‘Why can’t we have a workshop here about homeownership for our neighbors? If it’s in the legacy of Louis and Lucille — that’s what this space can also be.’”

Downtown Kansas City’s transformation, which started twenty years ago, is not the passive result of forces beyond our control, but rather the product of strategic decisions, local leadership, and investments that shape our new vision. Anonymous location data from mobile devices provided by Placer indicates attendance at Downtown’s performing arts venues, museums, and entertainment districts has rebounded substantially over the past three years with year-to-date attendance in 2023 ranging from 70% to more than 100% of 2019 volumes. ⚡ Attn: #eventprofs ⚡ In 1952, Woodstock, NY witnessed an event that would echo in the chambers of musical history forever.... ⬇️ Pianist David Tudor, poised before a piano, allowed silence to fill a room for 4 minutes and 33 seconds. This wasn’t a forgotten sheet of music or a lapse in memory; it was a deliberate performance of John Cage’s "4'33".” At first glance, a silent performance seems absurd. But look closer, and the genius behind it emerges. The piece reminds us that sometimes, it’s not about the noise we create, but the silence we leave behind. It’s about how the absence of something can be as powerful as its presence. Now, how does this apply to the world of #eventplanning, a realm dominated by sights, sounds, and experiences? ✅ Negative Space Matters: Just as a silent performance emphasizes ambient sounds, a well-planned event leaves room for spontaneity and organic interactions. ✅ Challenge Expectations: Tudor’s performance shattered the conventions of a musical recital. Don’t be afraid to surprise your attendees and offer them something they've never seen or felt before. ✅ Details are Crucial: The ambient sounds during the performance of "4'33"” were not accidents. Likewise, in event planning, every choice – from lighting to the arrangement of furniture – contributes to the overall experience. It's the details that transform an event from mundane to magical. ✅ Embrace Boldness: Taking risks can lead to unparalleled rewards. Similarly, if you want your event to be memorable, you have to be bold. Sometimes, that might mean doing less rather than more. ✅ Listen: The most significant lesson from Tudor’s performance is to listen – to the sounds, the silences, the murmurs of the crowd. Event planners should always be in tune with their audience, responding to their needs, their reactions, and their feedback. In a world saturated with stimuli, the choice of silence made by David Tudor remains an invaluable lesson. For #eventplanners, it's a beacon, reminding us that what we choose to omit is just as important as what we include. The balance of visuals, sound, and silence can create a masterpiece, even if it looks or sounds a bit different than what we expected. So, the next time you're orchestrating an event, remember the power of silence. Sometimes, the most profound statements are made when nothing is said at all. If this post resonates with you, please show some 🫶 with a 👍 or ❤️ and follow me for more #eventindustry goodness. 😁
